Are You Afraid of Sharks? Don't Be

Instead, celebrate them as magnificent predators crucial to the health of oceans—before it's too late

I'm not afraid of them, but I have a healthy respect.

I know quite a few people who have been attacked by sharks. We had two guys attacked in one year from our small local club.

I'm not afraid of most of them.. but when you get 3-5 of them on you at once and they get that pack mentality where they get real ballsy.. then yeah.. I get afraid. Tigers and hammerheads are kinda scary too.

Tommy, I have had that same thing happen to me.

So, the answer to the question of being afraid may depend on what you are doing at the time of any shark encounter.

Generally, I am not afraid of them and respect seeing them underwater. But, there are times when spearfishing with bloody speared fish that the human instinct of fear takes over. I suspect that is true for most of us spearing divers.

For example, like that time when I was essentially chased out of the water by a pack of bullsharks with bloody grouper on my stringer. Certainly, the fear factor was high at that time.

Re: Are You Afraid of Sharks? Don't Be

Sharks can tell when someone is in a panic state. They have poor eye sight and rely on sound and vibrations. When I see a shark and have dying fish I will immediately stay calm swim toward the shark and try to stick them with a shaft. Most times they will turn and never be seen again. The smaller younger ones are more aggressive. I have seen a few same big ones on common wrecks for many years as soon as you see them they slowly turn and swim away out of sight. At times I would have a bunch of fish with me on a stringer. If you panic I think they can feel that and it starts the frenzy.
