On the low tide, I was cruising along a ledge and nearly head butted one of the biggest damn jewfish I'd ever seen. He was probably 5-7 feet in front of me before I saw him. I was more shocked than him, I'm sure, as he was easily past 500 lbs. It was still shootable, but nearly impossible to shoot gags as you had to be on top of them and by then it was too late. Hogs, mangos were average. Some big ARS were seen. No sharks. Lots of Spanish Macks.

Forecast looks good all week, just dive the incoming tide and you'll be good. I can't understate how nasty the intercoastal looks right now. We Floridians have to do something about the runoff.

Thanks for the update. We plan to dive about 100ft. so hopefully we will have at least 30’ of vis.

You should be fine at that depth. We were prepared to run deep and further offshore, but the water looked good, until it didn't.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Out with DKay and his wife for the first time on their Bluewater Boat. Great boat for diving and you couldn't ask for better conditions. Pretty much less than 1 ft. all day 30 miles off Anclote working the incoming tide. Viz was pretty good in 60-75. Hazy 20, good shooting viz. The three of us cleaned up pretty good on the hogs and mangos. A couple bonus red grouper and one gag. I went medieval on a lionfish which should make for a good clip. The legal gags have moved and I don't know where they are. Nevertheless, we gots da meats. Saw my first moray eel in this area. I've only seen them in the grounds and S. FL. Thanks again Dave and Alyssa. Fun day!

Friday 7-19, 27M off Anna Maria in 100', vis was <6-8', came in to 65' and viz was 30+, chased a skittish Gag, and
managed some hogfish, overall it was a nice day. Temp was 86 top to bottom it felt, no thermocline.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Out with dkay and his wife today off Anclote. Pretty good current ripping on the bottom with the tides. Flat calm up top. Blue 25 ft. viz in 60. Green 10-15 ft. in 45.

We got our limit of hogs, some decent mangos and four gags. Dave beat his wife with the biggest gag today. No sharks. Not much else to report, other than I got my shaft back from last week. In an effort to mock me, it just slid right out as if it was never stuck.

Ate some hogfish bake tonight. Just another day in paradise.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

We went out of Newport Ritchie Saturday, August 3. Long run north. We ran over 220 miles for this long planned trip. I've had some downtime, but felt ready to roll. Shot well and had an amazing day! Amberjack did not cooperate. Saw hundreds of them, but they just were not quite large enough. Mainly dove in 100 feet of water. Temperature was 82, visibility was 30 to 45'.

5 of us limited out on gags, dang near did so on go's thanks to one really motivated shooter, and 9 hogs. Gags were all in 9-11.5# class. Lot of life, bait, turtle, etc. Healthy and fishy.

Nice haul there! A trip like that will quickly restock your freezer after some downtime!

Going out tomorrow morning with Narcosis Scuba. Fingers crossed the vis has improved a little. Not sure what to expect. Hoping not to have 6+ shooters in the water at same time.... Will post report

Truth. Same yesterday and today. It "improved" to 7-10 feet in 60 feet.

I literally dropped on top of a goliath grouper and if it hadn't seen me and scurried off, I could have been arrested for bestiality I never even saw him until he took off "thumping"

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

60 ft. off Anclote today with DKay and his wife. Great conditions topside. 25-30 ft. horizontal all day. One shy of a limit of hogs, some mangos and one sole gag. The legal gags just weren't anywhere to be found.

I shot one in the shoulder and he tore off destroying his shoulder in the process. I spent a ton of time on that dive playing hide and seek with the fish all the way down the ledge all while competing with a very hungry and persistent nurse shark. That made for an interesting dive. When I finally cornered the gag he slipped into an impossible to shoot hole and me and the shark gave up. I hate losing fish like that, especially when the grouper is slim pickin'.

We dropped on a wreck on the way in at 40ft. And viz was pretty good there too, except you couldn't see anything due to the amount of bait. Lots of life and a school of cobia.

Great time of the year to be diving.
