Nice job, Ryan. It takes a ton of patience and willpower to put down the gun and go with the pole spear. Anyone wishing to be a better all around diver should go TDY to pole spear land.

Re: Wahoo on the GATKU Pole off SoCal

What's funny is everyone talking shit about wahoo with polespears. The WR with a polespear is huge, that fish could have been taken with a pole, its just most people who live in ca have literally zero experience hunting wahoo.
I'd of bet money if you put your head down and got your fingers going a little more when he came in on the first pass it would have turned a few feet closer.
Coulda shoulda woulda though, its been years since I've got to even swim with wahoo

I hate to say it, but if you had a better polespear, you might have hit that beast.

Gatku are fast and good for small fish. But not great for bluewater.

should have chummed that fish on your stringer. Fish don't give a flying F##k about wiggling your fingers.

Literally anyone who has ever dove in Hawaii would beg to differ with you.

Wow!! 75% of these replies are negative. What the hell guys?? It was a sweet encounter captured on video by a spearo who's embracing the most sportsmanlike and primitive version of our hobby- on purpose. Do you think he shared it so you could all monday morning quarterback on his technique?

I say... be stoked you have that video to share and replay--- if people think the most rewarding part about diving is killing every trophy fish that comes into your sight picture--- they're going to end up disappointed and angry after a lot of dives. Why would we take time out of our lives to pursue something that is going to leave us feeling like that?

A stigma GATKU has been breaking with recent pending world records.
Sleek polespears aren't just for small fish. . .

This video might erase any doubts you have:

GATKU Polespear - Potential World Record Breaking Yellowtail and a 500lb Bull Sealion - Part 1 - YouTube

A GAT-KU 10 footer on a 25#+ yellowtail pulled by a 500# sealion. The whole rig was recovered a mile away completely in tack, fish still on. See the picture of the aftermath below. If the boat was not used to go and recover this fish, it would have been a world record also.

Re: Wahoo on the GATKU Pole off SoCal

Do you guys know what a hand plane is? For body surfing? The other day some nut was in the swamis reserve trying to throw his hand plane at corbina in the shallows to catch them. For like 10 minutes. When he saw me staring at him he ran up to the rocks, tied a bandana around his head like the karate kid and ran away full speed.

Just remembered that for some reason. Oh here's another thing that just came to mind:

I used to always say stupid stuff to my friends to make a joke / antagonize them a bit. Like "Dude, we should just get some freaking dynamite for this lobster." And they never just got into it like "Yeah, or a freaking trained pet otter". They'd always look right at me and say "no". Eventually I realized when you say stupid stuff people don't think "Oh he's a genius he's just making a joke, he'd never do anything stupid." They actually say "wow he says a lot of stupid s#it, must not be very smart."
