Spearfishing in Brazil

Vacationing in Brazil for a week now and have traveled to a small fishing village on the coast ~ the quaint town of Buzios. Bumped into some Brazilian spearos on the pier at sunset and they graciously posed for a photo.

Re: Spearfishing in Brazil

The copper statue was precariously perched on a shelf in the dive shop where I chartered from. It seems as though tank hunting in most parts of the world is not that popular and so I thought it was intriguing to find a statue with a hunter wearing tanks...

Ted,
Unfortunately we were in Buzios when you got back to Rio. Thanks for the offer to take us out - hopefully next time we'll be able to hook up.

More than likely, they were spearing for dinner. That kinda changed my perspective on the whole scene.

I can tell you that where we dove, the area was extremely overfished.....

Re: Spearfishing in Brazil

....in fact, on our last day in Buzios, we were relaxing on the sand and all of a sudden I spotted a woman entering the water from the beach not 30 feet from us carrying a mask, fins, and speargun.....

I grabbed my camera and headed down to the water. My portoguese is terrible, but I managed to ask her for a photo... I'm sure she thought I was nuts, but she played along....

Re: Spearfishing in Brazil

....I dropped the camera back at my towel and grabbed my mask and headed for the water. "I'm going in," I said.

"Be sure you ask her if it's okay; maybe she doesn't want you to scare away the fish....," Todd said.

"Seinhora, proxima aqui?" She nodded in agreement and I proceeded to follow her around. At one point we were doing our best to communicate and struggling through with a lot of grunts and pointing, blank stares and quizzical expressions and then she handed me the gun. Needless to say, there wasn't a darned thing to shoot at; or so I thought. Next thing I know, she's yelling excitedly at me and pointing down, and I peered under the water to see that she had maimed a bait fish of some sort. She tried stabbing it with the spear as it gimped along and scurried into the rocks and got away from her.

Re: Spearfishing in Brazil

After a while, I was thoroughly exhausted trying to freedive with no fins, no snorkel, no weight belt, so I informed her that I was heading back to the beach for a beer and when she was done I hoped she'd join us. (Though, I think maybe my Portoguese was so bad that she thought I asked HER for a beer...

Anyway, she didn't manage to come out of the water with any fish. And in my opinion, she was hunting under terrible conditions. Her mask looked circa 1950 and her fins and snorkel looked like she got them from a tourist shop for a couple of reais apiece. She, too, was not wearing a weightbelt.

The whole experience made me appreciate my life a little bit more. How often those of us living in the States take our abundance for granted...

Thanks very much for the post. It's very enjoyable to live your worldly exploits thru your eyes. I will most likely never make it there.

Re: Spearfishing in Brazil

Great post, Petra. It really can be an eye opening experience when you go outside the USA and see how things can differ. Someday we might be shooting those small fish for dinner also.
