Technical Spearfishing Technical Scuba diving is generally defined as going deeper than 130 feet. You must have the proper training for this extreme aspect of spearfishing.

What is the Best Training/Classes

for spearing 140'-160'? I'm very comfortable with my standard 80'-110' on 32% but want to start diving this depth. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

140 -160 are Nitrox dives. Air for simplicity. But you will sacrafice NDL.

Constructive.
Trimix is used to to increase cognitive thinking and problem solving abilities at depth. If i get narced at 150 beyond a reasonable level and you get it at 90 because your a rookie then i want trimix at 150 and recommend you start at 90.

Some people need trimix at 90 because they are a light narc, some people run air down to 300+ because they can. It what he wants which is why i asked.

Re: What is the Best Training/Classes

Much of the training for deeper diving isn't applicable to diving deep and spearfishing..I suggest diving with experienced divers who do those dives in practice not theory.Learn more about decompression and the various
methods to keep deco manageable.

Re: What is the Best Training/Classes

TDI Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures will get you diving safely to 150 with no limits on decompression.

Trimix get expensive real quick on OC, in my opinion 99% of people would be much happier diving mix with a CCR.

* Remember * the instructor matters MUCH more than the agency.

Re: What is the Best Training/Classes

I agree it's just the high purchase cost and extra stuff you should tote when in the loop that turns me away. When we don't need oc bail outs for cc safety i will sell my ski and buy a rebreather.

What about the people who narc out before 130? Still no He?

Re: What is the Best Training/Classes

IANTD has a course that is called Advanced Recreational Trimix that has a depth limit of 160' - perfect for the type of people you mention.

I do not have a set depth limit for myself on air. It all depends on a lot of variables:
  • Why don't I have trimix? (Cost? Availiblity?)
  • How warm is the water?
  • What is the vis like?
  • How hard will I be working?
  • Any other inherent dangers about this particular dive?
  • etc etc

One thing to keep in mind is that He doesn't only reduce narcosis, it also adds other issues (notice I said "issues", not problems). Your deco schedule will most likely be extended with He. You have to start thinking about ICD, among other things. Not that these aren't manageable, just things to think about.

P.S. I have paid for my CCRs in my savings in He multiple times... but I do a lot of deep trimix diving

Re: What is the Best Training/Classes

RBs are illegal to spearfish in many areas.Personally mix is something I don't consider till after 180' and I dive in vis and temps that vary so much that planning is not possible,we had 62 and 100' vis in 165' then 5 days later it was 75 and 15' same place.

Re: What is the Best Training/Classes

Excellent point. Where would one go to look into the legality of rbs locally? I feel like if i asked my local guys they would have no idea about OC vs CC....

Rebreathers may not be used for spearfishing in the South Atlantic east coast region.

I believe (but am not positive) they can be used in the Gulf where you are off Clearwater, but be careful with sharks in the area.

Thank you sir.

I made a call to my local ffw and as expected they didn't give me enough of a warm and fuzzy to drop the 12+k on equipment and training yet. I am following up with a letter and i will share it when i get a response. I have to admit the idea of spearfishing at 150 feet with no bubbles sounds worth cashing out my lightly used jet ski.

My h&l friends already say Im cheating on scuba so a closed circuit loop will drive them my favorite kind crazy.

Re: What is the Best Training/Classes

narcosis is usually manageable - just ascend or calm yourself down.
oxgen toxicity is a major problem - you will drown.

spearing is consider strenuous work load. for safety profile - stick with 1.2 ppo2.

try to stay above 157' with 21. if you get your heart racing and your breathing fast while below 157' - you can get you into trouble real fast.
try to stay above 90' with 32. if you get your heart racing and your breathing fast while below 90' - you can get you into trouble real fast.
if you insist on going beyond 157'. time to consider tri-mix.

for those of you that can go beyond 157' on 21. you got skillz (189') and ballz (220').
beyond 220' on 21. you qualify for the aquanut program.
