Re: custom track

None of the above.

Those who know better than me state that deep tracks are only good to prevent shaft wooble if you overpower a tiny shaft.

Other than that, they create additional drag, don't behave well with sligthly bent shafts, etc.

My homemade guns have very shallow tracks... think 1 to 1.5mm. This allows me to use notched shafts where the mono needs to be attached to the holes drilled through the middle of the shaft. If the track is too deep, then the mono rides on the sides of the track, ruining any kind of accuracy.

Granted any multiband gun gets a shaft with shark fins (and the mono gets attached to one of them) but I like to have choices. Devoto makes great shafts (in my opinion) and the shape and size of the tabs do not allow for cross drilling. So even thick shafts are rigged using the through holes.

I know my point of view (euro spearfisher here who shoots small fish) might not resemble yours... What do you plan on shooting with this gun??

Tks for your input Mikel. I live in Canada. I do spearfish a bit here but mostly with my young kids in fresh water. I use a pole spear here to make it just a bit more challenging .. LOL

But concerning my next build, this will be a reef gun, something similar to a Riffe Euro 120-130. I'm gonna be using a 7mm shaft with shark fins and 2X 14mm small ID bands. I do most of my spearfishing in Baja and Yukatan so this will be for snapper, groupers and maybe a Wahoo if I'm lucky =)

Re: custom track

Make the track half as deep as the shaft. But use a 7.5mm Shaft. Wahoo Grouper, etc a 7mm is too skinny. 8mm is probably too heavy for your bands unless you boost up to 16mm. 7.5mm will be a sweet spot. Open Track will allow for smaller Fins too.. Fins make a big deal on smaller shafts.

Re: custom track

Sounds like a plan! Do you have any build pictures yet? It is always great to see how people build stuff... saddly we don't have many WIP threads here in Spearboard.

Re: custom track

I made it 60% enclosed and 40 % deep track ,previously it was 80/20 but it seem the spear will be suffering from shifting ,I am not sure but may be the fully ET do something to the spear tail before exit the track .

Re: custom track

Looking good! Fresh water spearfishing is not allowed here. But when I have had the chance of freediving in some lakes I noticed the fish are not scared away as easily as in salt water. Probably because we don't go after them with a pointy shaft... LOL

Re: custom track

Tks !
You’re right, depends on the species but most are easy to shoot. When I do hunt, I mostly use a polespear for the lake. And this gun is way 2 long for lake use. The longest I’ll use is a 90cm.
When using my reef gun it’s just target practice.
