Do you use the plastidip in the spray can or the actual dip can?

Rattle can. It comes in different colors. I think Home Depot or Ace has more variety than Lowes.

Just a lil insite.... make sure you wear a mask, not one of those cheap ones either... a good 3m one... Lead releases some of the most Carcinogenic toxins out there..... really really really bad stuff... even in a well ventalated area..... (cousin is a metal spinner for the last 25 years)... last thing you need is something getting your lungs.....

Unless you get a respirator, it won't filter any of the fumes. A better thing is to setup a box fan behind you and to one side to blow the fumes away from you.

Cool project, I am pouring a fishing lure mold, I'm actually using weight belt lead.
I've found that lead from fishing sinkers is 'cleaner' than wheel balancing weights, which produce lots of 'slag' which has to be skimmed off as the lead melts.

3m designs different ones depending on the applications. I used them for chemicals, acid etc, but you had to select the proper insert. A fan just blows the fumes, you still breathe them....

If you use old wheel rim weights they usually will be covered in brake dust. Some brake pad compounds heavily use asbestos in the mix.

2X on the fishing weights. Go diving at a spot a lot of shore fishermen frequent and you will find tons of lead weights on the bottom. I found the most effiecient collection method was to dive down and pick a few pieces and put them in a pile. Keep diving down and adding to the pile. Dive down with a container and collect the whole pile. Remember to keep kicking while on the surface because you now have an extra 5 pounds of lead on you!

At first, I had thought of making a sand mold for my weights, but figured it would be a pain to reform after each weight, and the sand might be abrasive on my suit.. although, that may provide good texture for the plasti-dip or rhino liner others have suggested!

Yep.
It's not as bad in a coarse grained open mold since the steam has somewhere to go, but surface finish is going to suffer a lot. You did notice he added the pewter to the mold slowly at first didn't you? That will help dry the surface of the casting sand. Technique tweaks help help a lot with both safety and product quality.

When wet solid lead is added to the pot it's denser than the melt, so it goes to the bottom of the melt. The 1800x increase in volume when it flashes to steam happens in milliseconds at the bottom of the pot, generally making the melted lead in the pot exit the pot at high velocity. I've carried scars on my shoulders from my little brother "helping me" and dropping a cold wet piece of lead into the pot for almost 50 years. That was before I learned to wear heavy cotton clothes when welding or casting. A wet closed mold either flushes the lead already poured into it back out the sprue hole giving a somewhat predictable spray pattern (right at your face), or blows the mold open and sends hot molten lead everywhere. Since the human body mechanics provides that the best control of the heavy ladle is possible when pouring into a mold at or near waist level this "everywhere" distribution is a really bad thing!
