Lake Taupo Catfish Cull Polespear Competition

The Lake Taupo Catfish Cull Polespear Competition is a new addition to the NZ circuit and was an absolute blast!!

Brown bullheads were illegaly introduced to Lake Taupo (a world class trout fishery) years back, but have now proliferated to the point that the NZ Department of Conservation has declared them a noxious pest. In the spirit of saving the environment (and unbridled bloodlust ) some of the visionary minds got together and came up with this competition.

We had an awesome time. 36 competitors armed with polespears swept through the lake like a plauge and smashed cats for 6 solid hours .

Big thanks to everyone who's pictures I stole .

Yep, you can eat them. We made jambalaya and beer batter fingers.

Re: Lake Taupo Catfish Cull Polespear Competition

There were a few trout sightings, but the areas that catfish haunt are usually not the best for trout. The water was surprisingly warm, in the low to mid 20s (celcius).

Actually, that's quite normal for that area this time of year.

I was there years ago, the top water was nice but there was nasty
thermo at depth. I couldn't get any trout on fly up top, they were all down in the cold water.

Cheers, Don

Kolt was the master Catfish Culler, the proud inaugural Katfish King!
It was a great meet, with some new faces and old faces. There was the benefit of also doing some useful scavenging - anchors, lures, downrigger weights, fishing rods - great fun. The trout are apparently sitting down in the cold water at this time of year.

Nice one! We saw several trout hanging around near the thermocline out by the island last weekend.

sounds like a lot of fun and a little relief for a strained body of water...

No there is no spearfishing allowed for trout. Taupo has a very strong line fishing presence and spears aren't too popular. This event was organized closely with the Department of Conservation to avoid any potential issues. Went off without a hitch.
