Ocean Lore.... whats a good read

I just re-ordered California Blue Water Gold Rush. Its about the early urchin fishery in California. I also like the story of the USS Essex. I thought that a thread dedicated to good reading about the ocean would be cool. Book Review

Tommy
did you read "Heart of the Sea"? That was the story of the whaling vessel "Essex".
How about "Endurance"? About Shackleton's voyage. Another great read.

Mens Lives by John Mathison
Highliners by William McCloskey
Striper by John Cole
not sure if these were the kind of books you were looking for, but they are all good books about fish and fisherman

Re: Ocean Lore.... whats a good read

Hi Joe,
Yes heart of the sea was disturbingly excellent! I will check out Endurance as well as the books that Paddow listed..... I was kinda of thinking that Spearboard could have a dedicated book review.... Then again there would need to be enough material and interest ... Thanks Gentlemen

Re: Ocean Lore.... whats a good read

Shackleton's adventure is a great read. I had this collection of stories of shipwrecks which included stories from hundreds of years ago until present day. I forget the name but it was a great book, I'm sure others have read it.

Shadow Divers, by Robert Kurson

Fatal Depth, by Joe Haberstroh

Both are real life stories of wreck diving.

Re: Ocean Lore.... whats a good read

If you have any interest in Santa Cruz Island's history, these are 2 must read books.
The one written by Fredric Caire is fantastic.
In fact, I couldn't put it down.
F. Caire is the Great Grandson of Justinian Caire. Justinian Caire owned the island in the 1800's and ended up in a 20 year legal battle with his daughters and their husbands (Gherini and Rossis).
This book is written from the Caire family perspective.
The other book is written from the Gherini family perspective and is also a fantastic read.

Re: Ocean Lore.... whats a good read

I've been reading Len Jones "Hooks, Spears and Spanners" and it's great. I've been trying to find his other books but they are almost impossible to find. (if anyone knows where to get them let me know)

Every Carlos Eyles book I'ver read is good.

Last time I was there, Florida Freedivers had several of Len's books in stock.
I had the whole series but my grandson I believe has confiscated them from me. I need to check.

Mike.
