ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A Martin County man who suffered decompression

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A Martin County man who suffered decompression sickness while diving Thursday was in good condition at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, a hospital spokesman said.

Chris Nelson, 40, was diving in 60 to 70 feet of water from a boat called the Just Reel, authorities said. Officials received the call at 8:55 a.m. The boat was about 14 miles offshore just north of the Fort Pierce Inlet, but officials met them about 5 miles offshore, said Catherine Chaney, St. Lucie County Fire District spokeswoman.

“He was having problems with his air,” said David Ladomirak, commanding officer for the Coast Guard’s Fort Pierce station. “That caused him to surface too quickly.”

A deputy with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit took the diver aboard a Sheriff’s Office vessel and brought him to the Coast Guard station. Nelson was flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach for treatment about 9:50 a.m.

Thursday’s incident was the first medical call on the Treasure Coast for the lobster mini-season, which launched Wednesday.

Decompression sickness, also known as diver’s disease or the bends, happens when inert gases build up in the tissues and bloodstream during or after an ascent from a dive. It causes nitrogen to bubble in the blood and possibly expand and injure tissue or block blood vessels in organs as well as cause muscle, joint and tendon swelling and pain, according to medical directories.

The bends are treated with oxygen therapy in a hyperbaric chamber. St. Mary’s has the only hyperbaric chamber in the area.

We were getting ice and fuel when he came in. They had the chopper waiting on him. Coasties led the way, but he was on a sheriffs boat. His boat was just behind, with the rest of his crew. they looked pretty upset. Just a reminder for all you guys to do your full safety stops! Offgassing risidule nitrogen could help prevent this on a quick ascent.

Sorry for the Cuban remark. "i shouldn't put all cubans in the catagory of this idiot."

Re: ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A Martin County man who suffered decompression

I read this post yesterday and then got to work this morning and read my emails. I had an email from my best friends uncle. This was his son! He is doing OK. He apparently got his arm stuck going after a bug in a hole and burned through 700 pounds of air in 4 minutes freaking out. got it free and made it up 20 ft before sucking dry. He is lucky.

Also... When his dad told me the story, he said that they raced to meet the Coast Guard, but the Coast Guard wouldn't bring him on board. They said that they couldn't let a "civilian" aboard and made them wait till the sheriff to showed up.... Not sure I understand that one. I'm not sure what I would do watching my friend suffer while the Coast Guard just made us wait. I will have to get better details on what that was all about.

Not if he was out of air. When that happens, it is get up to the surface immediatelly and get bent. Cant do safety stops without air. And that is exactly why I dive with a 30 cube pony. Too much to live for.

I probably would have grabbed someones tank and went back down if I was asymptomatic.

We were also heading out when he came in. Here are pictures of the coasties and sheriff working on him as we passed for our first dive of the day.

What do you look like? Full of derrogatory terms for all kinds of races.
Must be some unhappy redneck bitch.

If he had a pony bottle, he would not have run out of air, right? That was my point, since your IQ and comprehension are lacking.

You are big for talkin shit behind a keyboard, eh?
