Question for you spearing vets
I've been lurking for a few months and I'm ready to start actually doing some spearing. I'm moving down to Galveston in September, so my question is what should I be doing now to make the experience more enjoyable when I get the chance to finally do some spearing? And I'd rather not spend all the start up fees on equipment if it's not something I'd like to do often enough to make it worth it so any advice y'all have for me on how y'all got started in this sport would be appreciated! Thanks

Re: Question for you spearing vets
So, you have never been?
What about diving, you have done that? I started diving from shore where I live at, (I do not live in Texas) and did a little fresh water too. Also dove at night for flounder. All this was done with mask, fins, and a pole spear. Had been diving for a year or so prior to going offshore, and went with some experienced guys the first time that I went offshore. Make sure you can dive first, then go with some experienced guys and watch. Then you can make the determination if this is for you or not. |

Re: Question for you spearing vets
there is a lot of stuff you can do to start building your body, lungs and muscles in shape and pratice.. yes whatever you do, go with experienced divers to get your feet wet. until your ready to jump and go for it. there is alot to it the deeper you go and the farther out of course..I would suggest reading all you can and taking a class on diving/open water wouldn't hurt anything. pole spear to start ...fins,mask and snorkel and get used to your surroundings and body at different depths..

Re: Question for you spearing vets
Im Glad to hear your interested in diving/spearing, were are you located? that can help determine what you can start doing.. personally with anything, you need to start making peace with the water..... learn to be relaxed, comfortable, and at home when swimming or diving...

Re: Question for you spearing vets
I live in College Station at the moment, but over the summer I'll be working offshore on a rig. Doubt I'll have any time to actually dive at all when I'm out there, but I'll continue to do breathholding exercises and cardio. Right now I'm planning on just buying an old polespear from craigslist and swimming around near the shore when I move to Galveston, and if I like it I'll try to move on to more advanced stuff. The hardest part is finding a buddy that also wants to kill a few hours a week training in a pool and knows enough about the sport, so if any of y'all are in Galveston let me know and I'll get in touch with you when I move down there.

Alright sounds good Alejandro. And limitless, could you maybe give me an idea of where a good place to start in Galveston would be?

Come with alejandro next time we hit up the lakes and we will give you an introduction to fresh water down to about 35'. I dont want to post all my good spots, but you are more than welcome to join us sometime... I have a couple of pole spears you can use to see if you like it...
