Boating distance to ocean through canals

Hi all,

I'm toying around with the idea of purchasing a property/moving to south Florida. For fishing/diving purposes, I'm narrowing the search to properties on the canals. The problem that I'm running into is that I'm seeing a lot of properties (in my price range) that are at least 5 miles (through the canals) from the ocean, some are ten.

To me, that seems extremely far, especially if there are speed/no wake limits in the canals, and I assume there are. Would I be better off just finding a property that's closer to a boat launch and driving?

Thanks!

Thats a pretty tough one Jeremy. Lots of variables: Budget, boat size, you and your wifes work requirements, size of house you want, etc. Living right on the water has its perks, and can be had for under $500k down in the keys or on canal homes in south Fl, but there are draw backs like higher taxes and insurance, potential for storm surge. In my city, on the water was way out of my budget so I found a small neighborhood with a private boat ramp and I am only 10 min or so to the inlet. There are different ways to avoid crowded public boat ramps but they will cost you to a certain degree.

Thanks for the info. About how far is your ramp from the inlet?
