1st Flatty of the season!

Coming back from the Big Island a few weeks ago diving with my buddies in 75 degree water and 70ft of visibility I haven’t been super motivated to hop in the water back here in Cali. Needless to say I finally found some motivation yesterday and decided to go for a late afternoon dive.

I figured I would comb the sandy areas for a while looking for Halibut and then work my way to the outer beds in case any ghosts were around. After about 30 minutes working the sandy areas and not seeing anything I figured I would work my way into the kelp. As soon as I got to the edge of the Kelp beds I noticed a ton of bait schooling in the sandy areas adjacent to the kelp beds and figured it was worth the time to look around. After about 10 minutes working the sand and rocks next to the Kelp bed I spooked my first flatty. I could not get a shot off and simply saw it glide into the distant haze. Historically I have found that if there is one there are more... On my next drop down I noticed a single strand of Kelp surrounded by sand and then saw a nice size Halibut head sticking out behind it. I immediately swam over and lined up on the fish when all of the sudden the Kelp stock switched directions and laid over my gun and impaired my vision on the fish. For a split second I thought I blew it and the fish was going to spook. Luckily the Kelp floated back to its original position and the fish was still there. I twisted my body slightly to make sure I was shooting the fish straight up and down because I knew I could push the shaft through the fish with my hand immediately in case the flopper didn’t engage. I pulled the trigger and at first I thought I shot it right through the spine because the fish didn’t move. As soon as I got close enough to grab the fish by the gills it went crazy so I stuck my hand on each side of the fish to make sure it was secured. Brained it and swam it in and the fish ended up being 31' my personal best!

Stoked and looking forward to more dives to come this season
