My catch for the Gat-Ku meet. Not bad.
I had a great time diving yesterday and hanging out with the Gat-Ku participants afterwards.
Overall I did ok. I believe I could have done a lot better, had I released the polespear sooner on that good size Hali I saw..I was so worry with shot placement that after having my pole 3 feet away from the Hali aiming in the middle of the body,I decided to move the aim closer to the head and that spooked him. I should have released the pole and not worry about aiming closer to the head. Could've should've would've..whatever. I had a lot of fun and the money went to a good cause. I also bought as many raffle tickets as I could but did not win anything....I really wanted that Gat-Ku pole spear...bummer. Thanks To Dustin from Gat-Ku for providing us with such a fun time and all the good stuff that came with the $27. It was all great. I am looking forward to next year. The Cabezon weight was 5.2..( I think). By the way, this was my first Cab...what's the story with the green color looking meat? I made sure the organs did not touch the meet. I also found a good side crab in the belly..that was gnarly. I think I did a good job removing most of the meat, don't you think?. Last edited by Markio; 07-19-2010 at 01:36 PM. |

Killer catch and fun day on the water. I don't know how you saw that cab in the rocks and too bad that hali got away. I think you have something with always checking the anchor line for game.
Next time those large sand bass are ours! If we had our guns some of those big ones would have been dinner! Good times bro! |

I have heard they eat a lot of octopus and the ink turns the flesh green. Could be a wivestail though. It is prety cool when it goes from green to snow white as it cooks

Nice Cab. The color will disappear upon cooking, just like with some Lings. I think it's cool. I love Cabs

Nice catch, that meet sounds like fun.
According to Milton Love (Probably More Than You Wanted to Know About Fishes of the Pacific Coast) the blue flesh "...may come from the copper-based compounds in the shellfish they consume." To answer your question about removing the meat however I'd say no you didn't do a great job removing the flesh in my opinion. I always cook smaller fishes whole (Cab in a heavy foil pouch filled with sweet onions, small 'tatoes, yam cubes, garlic, olive oil, cilantro and serano chilies is a pretty regular meal in my house) ,and then you truly get to eat all the meat. Best of all you get the collars and head/face meat which is some of the best on the fish. I've seen how at commercial fish markets they just take the fillets and toss the heads and skeletons in the bait bucket; so I know in the larger scheme of things wasting 6 ounces of meat is nothing. Still I always feel best about my catch when none of it goes to waste, and you did ask.... Jeremy |
