I spent 3 days last week diving around Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands. After driving for 8 hours towing Jim’s 26’ Grady White we arrived in Ventura at 4am, Wednesday morning. After two hours of sleep we made the passage to Anacapa in about 30 minutes. The water was a little cold and turbid for yellowtail. So we spent most of the time looking for white seabass in the murky kelp. I did one of my most creepy dives ever prowling around at sunset in a kelp forest with less than 10’ of viz. The dark shadows were really eerie. Alas the allusive seabass were nowhere to be found. On the last day of diving I squeezed the trigger on a 10 lb sheepshead thinking this was going to be the best thing I could get this trip – they make great ceviche. A little while later I was practicing my breath holds by resting along the edge of a reef and sand at 40 feet in open water. After watching the little reef fish for 1:20 min, I looked over my shoulder and there were three WSB swimming along the sand behind me. I pivoted around, lined up, and let the shaft fly. After peeling off about 100 feet of line from my speargun, followed by four hard runs, the fish gave up. I had caught my first white seabass at a weight of 26 pounds!

The icing on the cake was telling the story to LompocLocal and crew back at the boat launch and getting the head nod of approval.

Haha good to see you out there - So rad! Glad you scored man you deserve a good fish after three days of diving marginal conditions. Way to persevere that's how you get the slugs!!!

Very nice work

Rad!! So stoked for you. It's a strange thing to see seabass swimming on the bottom, because from the videos on youtube they seemed to be either suspended at the thermocline or near the surface.

This fish was not swimming on the bottom.

I saw your original slug Ren and I've raised you twice now. You need to get back on it. Show me some slugs!

Re: WSB Picture Thread

Finally got my fist one! Took months of hunting, a few missed shots, two ripped out spears and a bent shaft. Finally got a Andre 145cm mid-handle and it delivered.

Re: WSB Picture Thread
