Japan Fishing/Diving Location Recommendations
Hey Guys,
I was going to apply for the JET Program (assistant english teacher) for 2007 and we are allowed request areas that we would like to be positioned. I would appreciate it if you could give me locations that have good shore fishing and diving (freediving). It does not have to be epic locations maybe areas that have reef and surf. I am particularly interested in Okinawa or the islands off Okinawa. My dad says I should look at Yaiyama (an island off Okinawa) but he does not know how the fishing is. I’m interested in both city and rural area’s as long as it is near the coast. Any information, experiences, or suggestions about Okinawa or mainland Japan would be appreciated. Thanks, Roland |

Re: Japan Fishing/Diving Location Recommendations
Hi!
I'm in Okinawa right now and I would recommend it. Some of the other islands don't really have much to do. Okinawa has lots of other JETs and good nightlife areas. the water here is great and you could dive/freedive off any coast. And if you wanted to see some of the other islands its just a ferry ride away. If you come out here look me up theres always a couple spearos ready to dive and you'd be welcome to come along Chris |

Hey try Miyako it is great, tons of fish and is the next largest in the Ryuku Chain of Islands. They are aslo more foreigner friendly than some of the other Islands.

Most sharks are up north, I have only seen three in the lower 2/3 of the Island in 14 months.

I'm in Tokyo and the spearing isn't that great around here, but weekend trips to Izu penisula or the Izu Islands are possible. A mate of mine lives in Shikoku which is the smallest and most rural of the 4 main islands, and he says the spearing and diving there is brilliant.

I was in Okinawa for 13 months in 78/79 and never saw a single shark other than white-tip reef sharks.

Re: Japan Fishing/Diving Location Recommendations
I have a lot of underwater pics from Okinawa in a thread on the CA forum, but here are some tipside pics. Its really a beautiful place to dive.
The cliff shot is the first place I ever dove- across the island from Camp Courtney. I started salivating when I saw that blue water. The reef shot is right behind my BOQ room at Courtney. I just walked out my door and down the hill into the water. And the beach shot shows the other game common to the island. Bachelors and tactical bachelors spent a lot of time chasing the DOD schoolteachers. I dove at night a lot and took cold showers. |

Re: Japan Fishing/Diving Location Recommendations
Hey guys,
I was thinking about doing something crazy. I am flying home to Thailand from Hawaii, and have a connection in Tokyo. I have all my gear, and was thinking about just staying in Japan for a bit to go fishing. Where should I go (okinawa?) and will a warm 3mm be enough for the winter? What else do I need to know? Any help you guys could give would be great! |
