NSU Oceanographic Center: Happy Grouper Season
Hello hunters.
I hope everyone is having some luck now that grouper season has started again. This is a great time to catch some lionfish because the two species are often found in the same habitat. In fact, space competition is one of the impacts lionfish impose on native grouper species. If you caught any lionfish on your hunt don’t forget to complete a lionfish survey at the link below. Your information provides valuable data that will help us understand the effort required to control the lionfish population. Thanks to all of those who have already completed the survey. Keep up the good work and happy hunting! https://purdue.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_2fBzzIT2RTNuAVT |

I guess this is only for Broward and Palm Beach Counties? Do you have to harvest lionfish in order to complete the survey, or are sightings desired?

Re: NSU Oceanographic Center: Happy Grouper Season
Hello Tyson.
Lionfish do not have to be successfully captured for you to participate in the survey, but the survey is a measure of time spent in effort to remove and hunt them. The survey will ask how time you spent during the dive hunting lionfish. If you were not hunting them but observed the presence of lionfish, you can report your sightings at: http://www.reef.org/programs/exotic/report Thank you for your interest in the survey. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions in the future. Regards, Adam Nardelli |
