All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective.

Paralyzer tip and fish size

I've always wondered what is the biggest fish that one could take with one of these tips? How big of a fish could you reliably get without having to worry about losing your catch? Also are these tips safe for tough skinned fish such as trigger fish?

Re: Paralyzer tip and fish size

These Paralyzer tips comes in a lot of flavors.

I made one with 5mm tines and barbs out of 17-4 for a Diver that just loves it. This diver is hard on gear to put it mildly and didn't bust this one.

Diver technique part of it as well.

Diver-1- holds on to back of pole and lets the tip do the work.
Diver-2- heads for the front of the pole and gets a hold of fish to help prevent loss.

Why not just use a different type tip if the game is large?

Sharpness of tip, Speed at contact, Momentum from entire pole assembly come in to play.

More drag from these Paralyzer tips as well working against you.

I killed a 30+lb. Amberjack with a paralyzer tip once, but I was lucky and stoned him. Mostly I use them for Sheepshead during the spawining aggregation offshore, and they average around 5lbs or so. should be perfectly fine for trigger. Trick is to grab the fish quickly.

"100 days a year" is a commercial shooter, he has posted many videos of him shooting large fish with a paralyzer tip..do a search, here's a start:

Re: Paralyzer tip and fish size

Paralyzers come in all different size and shapes. I like tines that are spring steel and run around 14", bevel cut points and 1° angled tines. No one makes these so I make them for myself. Ive made them as long as 18" but they rattle and bend too easy at this length

Medium spears get 3/16" tines light spears get 5/32"

I only use them with light to medium spears. Mostly with smaller fish that typically school and I want to get as many on my stringer quickly.

Head shots work best and with a proper made designed paralyzer they hold fish very well.

Yes, they can take the largest of fish but there are better options and if you try to use them on larger fish you'll quickly find their limitations.
Stone shots are a must with larger fish.

This is from using paralyzers for the last 35yrs.

p.s. Tight strong tined paralyzers are a must for tough skinned Triggers.

Re: Paralyzer tip and fish size

Thanks for all of your help! I think I will look to get one just for things like trigger fish and leave my flopper and sliptip for the stronger and bigger fish

Hawaii state 3 prong record is a 50lb GT
He shot the fish 3 times, the final shot he broke off the 3 prong inside the fish' head and it still didn't die.
3 prongs are so much goddam fun to hunt with

Re: Paralyzer tip and fish size

My experience is that a 3 prong is great for fish to about 6 or 12 pounds (3 to 5 kg) maximum. After that, the chances of the fish being lost increase significantly but you can land some of the fish. It's questionable ethics to hunt larger fish with such a high chance of killing the fish and losing it, in my opinion.

I have not lost many fish smaller than 6 pounds off a 3 prong, but have lost several 20 pound fish and regretted taking the shot.

My biggest 3 prong effort was about a 30 pound (14 kg) yellowtail. I hid in the weed and when it came in I smashed him hard in the face up close, with my Lance Ohara 8 ft 3 prong. I hit it so hard it was 90% stuffed and I could grab it fairly easily.
My most meritorious 3 prong effort was one of our snapper (they are a porgy actually) of about 22 -25 pounds (10-12 kg) which I hit from above with my 8 ft Gat-ku 3 prong - the one with the barbs on the outside. The fish was 90% paralysed, and that is still one of the greatest moments I have had with a spear.

Sliptips are substantially better for large fish, with a much higher landing success rate. I swap from 3 prong spears to my sliptip spears depending on where I am hunting. Part of pole spearing is that you sometimes you just don't have the right gear for the job.

I agree with YS-Josh, 3 pronging is about the most fun you can have. Way more fun than using a sliptip.

Only method of spearing where you have to get that close AND have perfect shot placement when it counts...
