Re: Santa Cruz island 5/16
Oh and the food is excellent. At least it was a few years ago which was the last time I was aboard.

Looks like this guy can't make the trip and has to sell his ticket.

Re: Santa Cruz island 5/16
I took the scuba course through UCSB recently and went out on the Spectre today to Anacapa for my certification. Food + service was awesome, vis was not so awesome but we dove some of the reserves and found a hazy vis around 20 ft. Despite this, it was still awesome seeing what the reserve had to offer (we hit cathedral cove first), with enough huge sheephead swimming around to feed a village, some huge lobster, and some nice calicos. Strangely I didn't see much else besides these fish and some seals, seemed like the goats had set up a dictatorship. In addition, I realized that hunting goats with scuba would be shooting fish in a barrel–no fun, stared at a huge one until he bumped into my mask.
Anyways I'm sure thats enough marine protected goat stories for you, got distracted..just thought I'd give a report on conditions because they are pretty bad with Anacapa looking unhuntable. |

Re: Santa Cruz island 5/16
Alright here's the recap:
Big thanks first of all to Lino for hooking me up with his ticket. Crew: awesome. Other divers: rad. I'd love to dive with any of you guys again. Anytime you're in the OC hit me up and I'll take you out or try to help put you on a spot. Boat anchored up at around 7 and I looked overboard to see a dark green mess. Kind of thought to myself "well... I guess the boat needs to make money right!" haha! We did I think 4 dives throughout the day of about an hour and forty five minutes each. We made little moves in between. The first spot had a strong current and about 5 feet or less vis. 55 degrees. A couple guys saw fish, nothing shot. I saw nothing. The second spot produced one fish a few more sightings. It definitely felt fishier; there was less current and I was actually seeing some decent calicos. We pretty much stuck in that same area for the last two dives. Dive three produced one more fish. Then we debated going to Anacapa for hopefully better vis and a better shot at bass for those willing. Thankfully we stayed the course because out of nowhere as we positioned for the final dive we see a massive school, or maybe a couple close schools of seabass cruising the surface! About 60 fish! It was so cool to see them, and I'm sure everyone else was as amped up as I was. We got in and this time we got 4 more fish on the boat, including bowfront26 who got one, Cameronv who got a birthday cbass, and SCOTB who got his first and the jackpot fish. I was lucky myself, capitalizing on my only sighting of the day for my first WSB ever. Total count was 6 fish for 13 guys, which included 2 guys who had never spearfished before. Much better than I expected when I first looked into the water this morning! Awesome trip all around. Fish were all 10-15lbs with one at 22lbs. Re: Santa Cruz island 5/16
Yeah - what he said!
Many thanks to PEACE captain for keeping us in the fish. Rest was up to us! Thanks to Andy for motivating me to go at the harbor swap meet. I had such a great day and capped with great memories of my first seabass. It was a classic well played scenario with two fish side by side coming in outta 8 ft green hazy vis. I was ready and hit the closest through the back about 6 inches behind the head with the tip coming out of the gills , which tells me he was already outta there when he got hit. Rookie move was having my reel line coming out of the eye wrong so I had to quick pull and give line off the reel. Until I was able to flip gun around. Took about 50 ft and wrapped in the thickest surface and submerged kelp. Followed it out and finally got back to boat for some high fives from all. I'll do another trip again on the PEACE. |
