Looking for Bugs -- Hammered This Guy Instead
On a whim and a call from Alashaman, I went out looking for bugs. Found a few legals and tons of shorts. Great night for diving -- no swell, outside vis was 15' plus (Malibu) and great evening. I thought the rock by the base of a kelp strand looked funny, then realized it was a fully exposed halibut. Pulled out the hammer, placed a good shot, and signaled my dive buddy (Alashaman) to come over and help me pull the gills and attach it to my belt.
Went 31 inches and 11 lbs. Huge thanks to Alashaman for the assist. New PB Halbibut and PB Hammer fish! Conditions are great. Get out there! Last edited by KelpChaka; 11-13-2012 at 01:47 PM. |

Re: Looking for Bugs -- Hammered This Guy Instead
Seems like that would qualify as a "hooked device" to an unpleasant warden. Anyone shown one of these hammers to a warden and gotten the official scoop?

Re: Looking for Bugs -- Hammered This Guy Instead
I dive bugs with a Halibut Hammer also and never thought about that angle.
I'm also interested in getting a F&G response...... |

Re: Looking for Bugs -- Hammered This Guy Instead
Regarding the "hooked device", I've been stopped three times with it on my leg and they've never had a problem with it.

we carry them all the time, have talked to the local warned on multiple occasional and never had a problem... just don't bring in bugs with holes in them...
