Current - predictable?
Wondering if anyone can provide some info on whether the strength of the current is predictable or knowable in advance. Not sure if it is related to tides, time of day, etc.
Our last dive yesterday was pretty much a wash because of the extremely strong current screwing up the vis. If we can expect when it'll be like this it'll help with planning trips Thanks in advance |

Re: Current - predictable?
Inshore is quite predictable, just consult tide tables. I'll assume you're talking offshore. In which case, offshore currents tend to be circular in motion after you get away from the shore far enough. The stronger the tidal flow, the stronger those circular currents will be. Moving several miles away from strong flow can land you in low flow areas. I have seen some maps of these circular currents, but not something very precise...on a lower resolution per say. I'm inclined to believe that they are somewhat stationary in position like eddies in a river with uneven bottom/shoreline but change according to tide strength much like would happen in a smaller observable micro environment.
I'm sure some more experienced commercial divers on here might be able to lend more.

Re: Current - predictable?
Look at the water level on the tide charts next to the high and low tide times. The greater the variation between these levels indicates more water movement, aka current. This is a good indicator of what to expect but as Markus pointed out the gulf can be weird and you may find strong current in one depth then move shallower or deeper and it may be different.
