Xiaomi Yi review

I've been wanting an action camera for a while, but I was never able to convince myself to pull the trigger on a go pro. One of my friends told me about the Xiaomi Yi (basically a Chinese knockoff of GoPro) and it looked like it would do everything I needed it to, and for just $80. I looked here to see if anyone else was using it for diving and I was surprised that I didn't find anything. I decided to be the guinea pig bought the camera, waterproof housing, a cheap kit of GoPro accessories, and two extra batteries for a grand total of $130.

The Good:

The price is right
Easy to operate
Quality photos/videos
Fits into GoPro mounts
Decent battery life

The Bad:

It didn't come with any English instructions and the app continues to revert to Chinese while I'm using it. There are multiple English forums out there that talk about it, so you can get by, but it would be nice to have the original instructions

I have taken the camera to 68ft freediving and it sat at 4ft in a pond at work for over an hour shooting video for a project. Overall I'm really happy with it and if I do happen to lose it or flood the case it will hurt a lot less than if it was a more expensive camera.

I'm sure that there are shortcomings that a better photographer/videographer would notice but it has served my purposes beyond my expectations.

Here's a video I put together that was shot completely with the Yi.

Re: Xiaomi Yi review

Great video! I looked at one of the Chinese knockoffs, (SJ Cam), but surprisingly the wife convinced me to go with a GoPro instead. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to use it...

Hey, what resolution and fps did you use for that video?
Ron.

Re: Xiaomi Yi review

Most of it was shot in 1080p at 60fps. A few things in the intro part was in a lower resolution because of the whole Chinese instructions thing.
