Re: Carbon fiber question
Lots of good information here.
I was going to lay in some carbon fiber on my gun but I couldn’t find the cf tape that I bought a year ago, so I scrapped the idea for now. For a clean line I was going to try this and still will in the future. I was going to lay my 2” CF tape on to the sticky side of some same width painters tape. Trim off the frayed edges with scissors. Do some kind of pattern if wanted. Let the epoxy on the blank tack up a bit. Lay the cf tape with tape whereever you choose to. The tape should help maintain a nice clean in frayed edge. |

Re: Carbon fiber question
I might try a sleeve next time. I don't plan on wrapping the entire gun just for reinforcement at the handle joint. It seems you'd be able to get quite a few wrapped using just one sleeve.

The sleeves come pretty much as long as you want them. They are woven as one long continuous sleeve, though you pay for them per feet/meter. Soller Composites is a good place for them in the US. They also have some good info on the range of expansion and contraction for each size. It just takes a little while to get used to their website... |

Re: Carbon fiber question
Yes sleeves you buy per length. For spearguns the best size I find is the 2.5" which can contract or expand to fit most spearguns. If doing the back end only then the 2" size is probably more than enough. I use spray adhesive to spray that is designed to work with CF and not hurt the epoxy adhesion to spray on areas I will cut. I use Kevlar scissors to get a nice clean cut. With the adhesive spray the CF will tend to not fray. If you are fitting the sleeve over a trigger, then you spray the center with adhesive spray and carefully cut the middle and then fold that into the trigger housing. I use a 3D printed plug that matches the trigger to make a perfect fit. You could of course also use a taped up trigger … but that is just way too much work. Easiest is just to fill the trigger pocket cavity with some putty and then just use a sleeve over everything. After soft cure, you cut out the CF over the putty and clean out the putty. For sure this is not as strong as having the CF inside the pocket, but it is 10x less work. You also need to keep an eye out that your track level has changed with the added CF sleeve (usually about .3mm) so you need to either sand part of the track to level it down … or just lay a new epoxy with filler and graphite on the entire track that matches the level of the additional CF.
