Tournaments

Am I the only one here who disapproves of spearfishing/fishing tournaments? Don't get me wrong, i enjoy going out for a morning of spearfishing to get a few fish to eat, but to take to the water in teams with the goal of killing as many large fish as possible for a prize seems wrong. I hear of divers scouting in advance, finding what holes house large fish, feeding them to get them friendly, and then killing them on the day of the competition.
Not something I would want any part of...I sure hope one of these doesn't take place in any of my favorite dive spots...

Pretty much.

IMO: Most tournaments are fine; if there really was a problem with them depleting fish populations in a long term way, fisheries science would tell us so and the state/federal agencies would put a stop to them.
To be honest with you, I've never entered one, but not because of ecological reasons... I just figure I would come in last place!

i don't know anybody who shoots any less fish on nontournament days. If anything people become more selective on tournament days. Bottom line is that if you don't like tournaments or a particular format, don't enter. There is absolutely no reason that we all have to agree on this.

Come on, this post doesn't mean he's a troll. There are some well-meaning spearfishers who really believe this (although I certainly am not one of them).

Well what the hell. I haven't been beaten up or had a poll to ban me for a couple of days, so I'll say that you are not the only one. My main concern is simply that tournaments will end up getting spearfishing banned before I'm too old to keep doing it.

I am particularly worried about aggregate weight tournaments. The same guys that take limits during a tournament might have taken a limit that same day without a tournament, but they would not have brought all the fish to the same spot for a weigh-in and an attempt to get publicity.

And just in case that is not heritical enough, the drive to take limits in the first place seems strange. How much fish can you eat? If you are commercial and depend on taking fish for a living, that's fine, but I doubt most of you make your living that way.

Its been years since anyone on my boat took a limit of any species except during the period from March 15 to June 15 when the limit of white sea bass is one. We have a lot of fun and take all the fish we need to eat, but we don't try to fill the boat every time.

I do prefer trophy tourney's, but the best spearo is more likely to win an aggregate tourney. However, the truth is that a rec limit is rec limit is a rec limit and no tourney I've seen makes any changes to those.

An aggregate tournament is one where your score is calculated as the sum of the weights of the fish that you weigh. Typically, you can only weigh a limited number of fish in each species or category (e.g., 3 snapper, 3 grouper, 1 amberjack). There may also be a limitation on the number of points that you can score for a single fish regardless of its actual weight (e.g., 20 points for all fish 20 pounds or greater). The tournament format rewards hunters who can find and shoot decent sized fish of many different species rather than one big specimen. Some might also say that it levels the playing field a bit for (and thus encouragres the participation of) those who do not want to dive to extreme depths for, or risk handling, large and sometimes dangerous fish.

Rabispear,

The Spearboard Open rules last year dictated less than recreational limits. 3 per fish category rather than 5, except 1 AJ.

I believe that is enough to achieve the aggregate tournament purpose of the well balanced hunter as the champion.

That said I prefer a big fish hunt, and rarely shoot more than a
few fish.

Andrew,

Spearfishers are not allowed to assist one another in the water. The divers simply add their scores for a team category.

Chad
