New Member Bay Area
Hey everyone, I just moved out here to San Francisco from the New York and I'm looking to get into spearfishing and diving. I have very little diving experience, been scuba diving once about 7 years ago and have been free diving once last year. I am looking for some people to help show me the ropes and do some weekend trips with. I am working on getting my gear, I have mask, snorkel, fins but I still need a wet suit(from reading some posts 7mm seems like the way to go), weights and a gun(still researching). I am hoping just to go out diving and watching some other guys a time or too to get comfortable.
Any body out there in the bay area interested in adding another person to one of the weekend dives? Also any suggestions for a new diver getting started would be appreciated. |

Welcome.
New to it myself. I'm in SoCal, went to Berkeley 25 yrs ago though. Get the warmest wetsuit you can find for your cold water diving ( not that it's much warmer down here!). SF is a beautiful part of the world. |

Re: New Member Bay Area
Welcome to the Nor Cal.
One of the best ways to meet people from our area is to attend Spearing and Diving events. You do not have to be experienced to come up and have a good time. If you want to make some new friends in this area who you can learn from and dive with I would suggest you stop by Ocean Cove on August 18th. There will be some great people there and some great food and it is a very fun event. Come up and dive or just come up and hang out for the day. Re: New Member Bay Area
From SF you can go two directions - Monterey/Carmel or Sonoma/Fort Ross. If you go towards Sonoma you can stop by at Bodega Bay North Coast Dive Shop as it's probably one of the most spearfishing friendly shops around. Also there is a guy in Daly City who owns Anderson Scuba diving - he is spearfishing friendly and has some equipment and you can talk to him, he has some freediving wetsuits for sale as well as spearguns.
And definitely join the crowd in meetings. |

Re: New Member Bay Area
Thanks Everyone for the greetings and info. Any chance there is somewhere or someone I could borrow/rent suit from for my first few dives until I get an idea of what I should be looking for in a suit?
yevgenb - would you be able to put me into contact with the guy in Daly City? Thanks, Kevin |

I don't have his contact but he is the owner of the Anderson's Scuba shop. He was the only one guy there, if I remember correctly his name is Dave.

Hey Kevin,
I'm in the east bay area and would be down for a Monterey trip with you. I'm a noob as well with about 5 spear dives under me. There's a couple good places to rent gear in Monterey. PM me if you're interested. -Neill |

Re: New Member Bay Area
Hello Kevin & Neill,
I used to freedive/spearfish 2x/month in Monterey/Carmel all the way to north coast for a good 7 years until that run was broken when we bought a house 3 years ago and I got bogged down w/ house remodeling/projects-- and trickled down to 2 dives/yr.... I want to get back to it and can hook up w/ both of you. Regards, -Ron |

Re: New Member Bay Area
Ron - I PM'd Neil and am still waiting to hear back but it'd be great if you could join as well. I think for my first dive I will probably opt to just dive and save the speargun for another time. I am looking into where I can rent a suit for a time or 2 and then I will be buying my own.
Any preference on time or place to meetup? I am willing to drive a couple of hours if necessary. I will PM you with my contact info so we can talk about more details. Kevin |
