Vegetable Glycerin as Suit Lube?
Title says it. I wound up with a gallon of vegetable glycerin that a roommate bought for a project, but never used much of. Now that the Sally's Beauty condition is off the market, I'm looking for an alternative. I know vegetable glycerin is sometimes used as a skin care product, so I'm curious if anyone has ever used it as a wetsuit lube?
Thanks. |

I have not used it, but it is safe for consumption and skin contact. In fact, it is good for your skin. The concern, however, would be how it would react, if at all, with the rubber. My guess would be that it is safe. The only thing would be the viscosity. If it is too high it may be difficult to rinse off the suit. If I were you I'd dilute it (no idea how much) and throw it in an old sock or if you have an old suit lying around you don't care too much about. Let it sit there for an hour or so. Dump it and see if you can rinse the sock out without issue and residue.

Does vegetable Glycerine go rancid? That would be my main concern...

Re: Vegetable Glycerin as Suit Lube?
I always tell customers to stay away from anything oily and not easily rinsed off, or anything like conditioner that is meant to leave behind a residue. People end up having more frequent and worse issues with microbial growth in their suits and folliculitis using conditioner. You want something that washes off easily and won't trap anything in the open cells of the wetsuit where it will feed growing funk.
Every few dives I also soak the suit in a dilution of hibiclense and don't rinse it after. I never have problems while following this regimen and the wife thanks me for not having a smelly wetsuit around the house! |

Use a natural soap and add a few drops of an anti microbial oil like tea tree, seems to do the trick for me. A splash of white vinegar might help even more but i haven't tried it.

This product worked good too in testing, not sure if they're still selling it or not
