Neoprene crushed to nothing, alternatives to yamamoto 39?
So... everyone uses Yamamoto 39 it seems. I won't mention brands but that's almost everything available in North America...
I often dive in water that should be frozen, like 0 Celcius or 32 F. To do this I use a 7 mm standard spearfishing suit with some special implements for the face etc... and I do fine. Anyway, right now, in Baja, I switched from my brand new 5 mm to 7 mm, and I'm still cold. The suits get all rippled and crushed within three weeks of intense diving at 70 to 90 feet. I killed four suits in three years in Baja. What are the other options? Are there neoprenes that resist compression better?

You need Heiwa or NJN. Oth are resistant to compression

The softest, stretchiest neoprene's are also the ones that compress the most. The ones that hold up best ( usually least stretchy and soft) are thus more critical on fit, ( read; one size doesn’t fit all…) and are not as popular.,

I may have to go towards less stretchy, it's getting ridiculous
Any suit company recommendation? I remember the Dessault xtend lasting under pressure.

You could go with Elios, polosub, pathos. Pathos makes a great off the rack suit. (Thira model). Beuchat makes a great suit also i hear. Yamamoto 39 was not originally designed as a diving suit like its Y45 counterpart was. Instead, it was primarily designed as a swimming material for things like triathlons and surfing due to it lofty buoyancy. Checkout: https://www.eliossub.com https://www.polosub.com/eng/ http://www.yamamoto-bio.com/yamamoto...rubber_02.html This site gives a good comparison of their materials You can get the pathos suits here at a decent price. Petros always takes good care of his customers. www.spearamerica.com Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I checked out Elios sub... they sell Heiwa, Nam Liong, Sheiko, NJM ($$$)et Neoflex ($$$).
There is sometimes a great difference in price between the materials, but no explanations, specifications, comments, anything lol. It's a like a website from 1995 lol.

Re: Neoprene crushed to nothing, alternatives to yamamoto 39?
Thanks, I looked at the www.spearamerica.com
The only suit that gives information about it's neoprene is the Pathos Thira and it's Sheiko. Unfortunately, it's only standards sizes and since this neoprene is supposed to not stretch as much... and I really don't trust sizes anymore (often short bellied people fit lol) Nice suit though (no camo! WOWWWW) : The logos are a tad intense, maybe make them smaller or gray, just saying.

Shrimp is a great neoprene. Not as stretchy as Yamamoto but still awesome. Spearamerica does offer a camp version of the thira suit. It’s one of the most popular suits out there.

Yamamoto 39 as it stands now, it looks like i put it in a waffle iron...
Like this, all over : Can't continue using yamamoto 39 (another suit, same material, wasn't new but wasn't waffled a few weeks ago, shouldn't have used it here at depths, it would have had a long life in Canada and the East Coast, i killed my 7mm )

Re: Neoprene crushed to nothing, alternatives to yamamoto 39?
Yea...but...but...it was Really SOFT...AND Stretchy when new / one size FITS ALL....and EVERYONE said it was "THE BEST...."
Yup...Been there. I made suits using Yamamota. ( one time I bought a container, and had it shipped to the US...what a Nightmare that was, customs and all) but I favored Rubatex , Used allot of G231 for wet suits, and R1400 for dry suits & barefoot skiing suits and durable suits. R1400 was NOT soft and stretchy, but lasted forever, had the BEST insulating qualities, and was a great shock absorber when you were bare footing and fell at 60+ MPH ! But that was a long time ago in a land far far away. I believe I still have some info on Shieko...PM me. I still have a suit I made for myself from shieko that is 15+ years old, yea...faded...yea, it shrank ( you can see where I alerted it out with inserts) but serviceable to this day! I also have some Yamamoto left over that is worthless...looks kind of like the pictures of your suit, only it is in full sheets. PM me, I can send pictures and we can talk. but honestly,, I have been retired 17 years, so I wouldn't want to pass judgment on other brands...well. there are a couple I have things to say about. but that is another story. |

Re: Neoprene crushed to nothing, alternatives to yamamoto 39?
If I had to dive in cold waters, I would get custom made wetsuits. Period. And smooth skin. Nothing lined.
This being said, Heiwa MD is your best option if you dive deep. Elios staff is very competent and they take their time explaining you what's your best option for your needs. Shoot them an email and they'll help you for sure. Also Polosub is a very good option. And, if I were you, I would get a pissette. Peing in your wetsuit will make you cold. You first feel warm, but then, that pee gets cold and freezes you.

Re: Neoprene crushed to nothing, alternatives to yamamoto 39?
Just so you have some insight as to what determines the usage of different neoprene. here is a partial list of specs;
Elongation Break ( % ) Tensile strength (Kg/cm squared) Tear Strength ( Kg.cm) Hardness ( shore 000) Density ( g/cm3) +or- 0.02 Modulus at 200% ( kg/ch2) water absorbtion by weight (%) Shrinkage ( 70 degree C 24 hrs) ( %) Compression set (%) Flammability ETC...the list goes on and on...try and make sense of it if you wish. |

Re: Neoprene crushed to nothing, alternatives to yamamoto 39?
seatux, I was given the specifications of all the yamamotos, heiwa and Sheiko...
They don't compare since they used different measures lol. great way to keep everyone from being able to do serious comparisons.... That said, I trust community feedback more than companies (who the hell verifies that those numbers are true?)
