Smile Advise and Help - Keys and Miami Trip

Hello everyone, This is my first time posting. I am a nubie Spear fisher from Ohio that has only gone a couple times. My girlfriend and I are traveling to Marathon Keys for 3 days and then to Miami for another 3 days for a spearfishing trip. We are going on a charter in the Keys for a couple days March 16-17 and then we are hoping to do some shore diving in Miami from March 18-20th. We would love if there was anyone that doesn't mind nubies and could show us the ropes. I would be willing to pitch in $$ for your troubles. We are looking for spots to dive for beginners. We both have our own gear. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Keys and Miami Trip

A lot better than it is now haha but the only problem is that Red, Black Grouper and Hogfish are out of season in march. Those are usually the best "easy" species to target for beginners in shallower waters. Theres still other fish to target like Snapper, Yellow Jacks, Barracudas etc but they aren't as good as Grouper and Hogfish lol But the weather should be better definitely. Lately its been super windy, high waves, murky water etc.

Do you struggle to hit a fish that sits still in a rock?

Re: Keys and Miami Trip

I've been spearfishing in Key Largo, Miami, and Marathon for a little over 10 years. BGs can be spooked easily. However, when you look at a rock you gotta be careful and slow. Its not hard to not spook it out of the rock. The challenging part is getting them out. But nonetheless, If I see a legal BG its going in the cooler 9/10.
