How I respond to misinformed busy-body vigilantes harassing me about MLPAs

I saw this post on a halibut hunting thread, and thought Id share my response to anyone who tries to talk MLPA borders and regs with me while Im on a shoredive. One of my spots is right on the border of a MLPA associated with UCSB so I expect my share of do-gooders trying to educate me. Ive only used this response once and got the desired response; the kook walking away and muttering under his breath.

Here is the post I refer to.
"Forgot to mention the MPLA officer.

Some POS troll comes up to up as we were getting changed and wanted to let us know the minimum size for halibut is 27".

He also informed us that we were diving in a no take preserve.

I just want to let everyone know it is important to know the rules and regs and we as divers need to follow them.

I am not sure if he knew what he was talking about or if he was just an asshole. He was stern enough that if we had no idea about the MPLA maps he would have been able to persuade us to not dive there."

I have anticipated this BS and have my canned response delivered in a quiet deadpan, pedantic manner. So what I say to all is this.

"Before this conversation goes one step further you need to answer two questions for me.

One is, are you aware of DFG regulation #2009? No? It protects sportsmen who are legally hunting and fishing from harassment. It provides for criminal penalties for those who do interfere in legal activities.
Two is, do you know exactly where the border of the MLPA is? Because I do, and I have a map from the DFG that shows it in my dive bag.
If you are not certain of your facts you need to stop this harassment and interference with my lawful activity NOW. if you want to peruse this conversation further I will call DFG right now and have you charged with violation of section #2009."

We need to take a hard line with those who would like to drive us from the coast and into the Whole Foods $20 a pound seafood section where they get their fish. Think about your response, and be ready as this will become a common place annoyance in this era of closures and morons.

That is a great response. I'm going to take that and make it my own, just in case. Lucky for me im almost always diving from the boat so I feel lucky to not to have to deal with that BS very often, or at all. Thanks for posting..

On our club dive at Lil Corona over the weekend we encounted some old lady teaching a class that began to yell at us;

"you know this is a preserve right?!"

me; hope so

"You know you are poaching right?!"

me; yep, please call DFG I am sure they'd love to have a talk with me.

Argument with ecos is fuetile... just make fun of them and go about your day.

This is a great defense for those trying to intimidate people who are legally enjoying the waters. Thanks.

Excellent, I'm stealing it.

I expect to be having a few "conversations" as well.

Thanks for posting up.

i'm stealing your response as well.

does anyone know what the situation is with those t-shirts in one of your pics, jeremy? i can't remember if they ever got printed up, or where to get them. that would be the only shirt i would ever wear for shore diving.

Very well said, I hate those people, they had some in Carmel. fortunately I don't get harassed here, if anything people are more interested, but I'm sure you guys will need to have it memorized after all these closures.

Re: How I respond to misinformed busy-body vigilantes harassing me about MLPAs

Gotta use this next time...Had a guy harass my friend a couple weeks ago accusing him of diving in a MPA even though my friend was diving in a legal zone. My friend responded back to the guy telling him that the spot they were at was still open n' the guy responded "well then..it's closed to YOU!"

Dove this morning and my friend managed to scratch up a limit of bugs. This lady got on his case informing him that lobster season was closed. He told her that it was still open n' she insisted that it was closed..then she accused him of shooting the lobsters..then she accused him of using a net to catch them...she made the other beachgoers around him question if he was poaching.

It's getting to the point where you have to carry around the dfg handbook when you dive nowadays.
