Re: Good Beginner Pole Spear??

No such thing as a beginner spear. Just a cheap spear.

Get a crist or gat ku 6 ft and have them rig you a longer band. I would have to ask what your normal viz and targetted species are for a more in depth suggestion

Re: Good Beginner Pole Spear??

any 6' pole. as for a tip i use a $30 jbl slip tip and land fish from 1-15 lbs. if you are hitting bigger get some thin rope and tie like five or six feet of it to your band to your wrist in case it rips the pole from your hand

I don't think thats a good idea... I kid drowned when he placed a shot into the reef and could not get it out. Also a big fish could take you down.
A 30' or so tag line attached to the band is a common method.
7 or 8 footer is good all around size...shorter is good if you're hole hunting/bad vis and/or in kelp.

A good beginner pole spear is something cheap, preferably something you buy second hand, its a learning tool. You dont want to run out ther and buy the bigest most expensive pole spear when your learning. You need something to practice with, theres gonna be misfires and you will drop it a few times and hell you may ever hit rocks with it a few time when you miss that first large fish but you know what its ok. because practice makes perfect and after a few months with the beat up used stick and you still like spearfishing and you have taken down a few decent sized fish, then you can invest in a proper polespear and go kill them like a champion while looing stylish...

I bought my first polespear from a buddy of mine, it needed a new band and the tip was blunt but i fixed it up and now its one of my go too poles for hunting the surf.

As a new owner of a ray odor, I would also recommend one. They are inexpensive for the quality, and for what you get! 50 bucks shipped to my door for a 6' spear, band, flopper tip and 6mm adapter. and it got here quick..
