Re: spi jetty viz

What's going on Kerry. Saturday we had 50ft viz near the end. Really odd. I wasn't expecting it at all (I don't think anyone was... considering I was the only diver out there). Water was noticeably blue 50yds off with kings busting bait but low tide created a murk over the rocks. Once I dropped under it opened up into some of the best viz I've seen in a while at the jetties...just couldn't tell from standing on the rocks.

Went out Sunday at the same time and water was 6ft viz.

According to a buddy, today was also quite murky at 2-4ft viz. It's basically an outgoing tide all day.

Thanks Chris, Yep, it's all about the tides.

Re: spi jetty viz

Pretty nice is an understatement! water is flat as a pool and the sand down at PINS is packed hard which allowed me to drive to 20 mile marker which is pretty rare I hear. Heading back on Monday evening if anyone wants to partner up and dive. Aloha

I would love to get some mangroves!! If anyone has a boat, I got a little gas money.

Re: spi jetty viz

Water was great today at SPI Jetties. 50ft viz early on. Unfortunately not many good mangroves or sheephead around.

Mostly shot spade fish and pompano for fish tacos.

Re: spi jetty viz

The full common name of the variety found around jetties is the "Florida Pompano". They look like a small permit. Beautiful yellow iridescent tint. Nice and tasty.

Roger that brother! Been meaning to head up there. Packery is where it all started for me. Went to TAMUCC for a couple of years and spent money I didn't have on a JBL Custom. Shot a lot of fish there and hooked me for life.

Re: spi jetty viz

I've actually never dove the Packery before. Always murked up. Where's the best place to jump in? If it's clean I'll give it a shot. Hoping for the water to be semi clear to paddle out to the oil rig just off shore. I know what you mean about being hooked for life man. Just wish I could get a break on the weather.

Re: spi jetty viz

I usually made my choice there based off of wind and swell direction.. For example, South wind with South swell...I'd hit the South Jetty Channel Side or North Jetty Surf Side and vice versa. I seem to recall spending most of my time on the South Jetty Channel side. Yeah weather has been weird lately but seems to be gaining consistency.

Let me know if you ever need a dive buddy! I'm always down to make a trip or meet up here.
