Lionfish question

Can't seem to find the answer, but I had heard that even if you spear/kill a lionfish, it could still release eggs (if it were near its time) and they could survive. True or false?

Reason I ask is that when I'm spearfishing and come across small lionfish that aren't worth the trouble of snipping and stringing, I want to kill them and leave them, but am now wondering if I should take them as well?

Re: Lionfish question

For what it's worth, I've read they don't become sexually mature until about 7-8 inches. I'd like to know the answer too.

Meanwhile, after the last Lionfish nearly stung my hand using those small EMT shears, I picked up some new 14" Stainless Steel Lionfish scissors at Harbor Freight for $4. Need to find a sheath solution though.

Re: Lionfish question

It sounds like urban myth, but I have no sources other than the knowledge that basically all fish lay eggs that are fertilized after they're out. I would think it very odd for male lionfish to spawn over a dead female.

Never discount just how far a male will go to have sex with a female, regardless of her condition.

Lionfish question

I would keep killing them and leave the ones you don't want to eat. The way I see it they are going to spawn (and probably with a higher success rate) if you don't kill them so the risk of them spawning after they've been killed is lower than if you simply skipped over the ones you don't want to eat since they're inconvenient to spear. As mentioned before, the ones you're leaving probably aren't mature adults so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

LOL.... this thread is funny depending on where you pick up.... I saw "I just kill them and leave them there" and was thinking of the "never discount just how far a male will go to have sex with a female, regardless of her condition." and the "Dead Grils can't say no" pic..... and I was like dang, these guys are ruthless serial killers!

Re: Lionfish question

Reminds me of an old joke.

A Frenchman is telling a buddy about having sex with a woman on the train tracks. He describes how the woman just sort of laid there, not responding to his amorous skills. His buddy said, "What, Phillipe - was this near the Seine and Moulin Rouge? I heard they found a dead body there." The Frenchman's eyes bugged out and he said, "Gaston - mon dieu! I thought she was just Jewish!"
