Re: my future dive boat project

I havent really thought about it yet.... just trying to take it one step at a time and get it functional first. I have been looking at some various lowrance models.... Im even thinking about getting rid of the full tower and going with a half tower.... but its just a thought right now. I officially began the rebuild today by cutting out the front and rear motor well bulkheads. Im planning on getting the rest of the engine box built tomorrow and fiberglass it in next week. Im on such a limited budget that Im not sure how much Ill have for the electronics. Any suggestions on what to use? I have a chart card for Lowrance and Eagle electronics already.

Re: my future dive boat project

steelmeal if you turn that tower into a big t-top that would be awesome!!! and it would not take away from the look of the boat either...

Re: my future dive boat project

i was thinking about cutting off the upper controls and making a big half tower with it. It makes more sense than trying to sell it and buy a new half tower that would have to be custom fitted to the boat. Noone thinks I can get the boat up and running for under 10k bucks, but I think most of the work is the fiberglass work, and thast will be done by me. I love a challenge....

Re: my future dive boat project

you are going to be ral close to that # pending how extrem you go with your rebuild theres always ways to cut corners and still get the same result but how long will it last
the only thing I see costing you serious cash is the motors and running gear
for your tronics always check ebay I just bought a gp37 furuno for less than 200 bucks and an ls4100 fishfinder for 80 bucks brand new. I know where you can get an older full color raytheon fishfinder with power cords and transducer for 150.00 its a older but very strong commercial machine. also how is the gas tank that was in your boat does it have to be replaced ?

Re: my future dive boat project

The guy I bought the boat from threw in a 125 gal and a 35 gall plastic tank.... they are used but in good condition. Ive heard good and bad regarding the plastic tanks as opposed to aluminum. Im sure aluminum would be a better choice, but for a practically brand new plastic tank for free im going to save the cash and use the plastic. I can always have an aluminum one built if I needed to. Im planning on working on the boat tomorrow so ill post more pics soon.

Re: my future dive boat project

Sorry its been a while guys. Ive been busy trying to get the stringer system in place and glassed in. I ran out of my heavy duty resin and have to wait for the new shipment to come in. the fiberglass isnt too hard to work with even though it's 18 oz. mat. It definitely likes drinking the resin though. Im about 80 percent done with the stringer system, then its on to the under floor rigging and floor. after that I will rebuild my topcap and get this thing gel coated and ready for final rigging. I will post pictures in the next few days.

where did you come up with that grid for the stringers?

original design?

here is a conch stringer grid system. stringers run the lenght of the hull

Re: my future dive boat project

the floor plan was designed by myslef. The original stringer system was rotten and the floor was already out (originally a teak sole). I the floor will have storage and batteries on each side of the engine compartment. the front is not completed as of yet because I dont have the fuel tank yet. I have to get the tank in order to position the stringers properly. When completed the stringet system will be the full length of the boat just like your picture.

Re: my future dive boat project

I guess what he is trying to say is that your 2 main stringers should run the length of the boat if im not mistaken it will creat soft and hard spots that could cause serious problems after your work is done. basically run 2 main stringers thru the length of the hull then ribs can be added from side to side.
right now you have a void in the bow of the hull when it hits a wave it will crack

Re: my future dive boat project

the open area is where the fuel tank will be. i picked up a new 112 gal tank and the remaining stringers will be added in the next week or so. i plan on having the stringers connect to the front bulkhead, but i didnt know where the stringers were going to fall until i got the tank. im confident the boat will be extremely strong once completed. ill post additional pics of the finished stringers soon.
