Mako Sharks, Bare Island NZ, 27 Feb

Here are some pictures from yesterday. We were burleying for albacore tuna and these guys showed up. The last few are video stills, the last three are of the 8-footer that chased the little guy away.

Thats some deff awesome footage of a mako up close in action. great pics. You guys get a tsunami threat for NZ. We did out here in hawaii and nothing has happend besides a few quick tidal changes. From low to high then back to low and just repeated this over and over again.

Yeah, I heard about the tsunami warning early this morning. A 1.5 meter wave was recorded in the Chatham Islands; the wave would have hit the mainland already, so things are pretty much back to normal.

Now we can go chase tuna and sharks again!

Hi Kolt, Those are some of the best photos I've seen on here. So, you were burlying up and then some makos showed up.. I see a photo of one of them chewing on your flasher? Some of the other photos, they appear to be with fins down in some strange postures.. Let's hear more about this. Did you have burly with you? Did they buzz you? Did you continue fishing, did you feel they were a threat? I've often wondered about some kind of Mako showing up out there where it's already turned on from Burley or a fish on the line. Any insight into how Mako's differ from other sharks? I notice they appear to be on the surface? We are usually shore diving, so jumping in a boat is not an option... Great Shots!

We set the hook in 70 meters in an area where we had heard reports of albacore. Flashers out, burley in the water. It took the first mako about 15 minutes to show up. At first he wasn't too interested in the burley. He checked out everyone's gear, especially the connetions between floatlines and definitely the flashers. He chomped the flashers about 6 times and two of us have it on video. This shark was only about 4-foot and didn't act agressive at all, so we didn't see him as a threat. He stuck around for quite a while and then the albacore showed up and started chomping the burley. I was away from the action unfortunately, so didin't get a shot.

A few minutes after the albies left, I was filming the little mako when all the sudden the big one charged the little one directly from behind and underneath me (the little one took off and we didn't see him again). It spooked me a little, but I turned the camera back on him. The big guy had a couple looks at the flashers and I made a quick dive to get a level shot. He met me half way and came in nice and close as you can see. That was close enough for me, so I started back to the boat, only to find my mates already safe and sound on board!!

Cool story. I've never had to shoot or wanted to shoot a shark, but in addition to looking a bit menacing, those ones also look pretty tasty.

AWESOME pics KOLT! Any chance of getting the video uploaded??? That sounds like something I would do (diving down to get the shot). Go figure the buddies high tailed it out though. That would probably be most peoples' reaction.

I like that kind of mentality.
