just moved to south houston

Hi everyone,
I just moved to Houston from Rhode Island. I had started spearing up there this summer and was just getting addicted before I left. We can get fish up there a few feet from shore, but I noticed the water hear is pretty ugly. What's the best way for me to get out to the rigs? Im on a tight budget, so cheap ideas would be great. Anybody with a boat want another buddy?

Welcome to Houston. While you're down there, you need to check out a place called Boondoggles. Kick-ass ceviche.

You came in on the back-side of our short season for offshore. Most of our runs out here are at least 20 miles and often as far as 60. There are a few weeks left so hang around and maybe be willing to drive as far as Port O'Connor when guys need divers to fill the boat. Six-pack Charters are around $250 and private rides are $100 or so depending on fuel consumption.

You can spear non-game fish in State waters and in Texas salt water that includes most snapper (not Reds) sheephead and quite a few others. For freshwater, you really only get gar and carp. There is a list of "Game Fish" on the TPWD website. Our inshore waters are usually very murky but they do clear up for brief periods, typically in mid summer. Generally, the further south you go the better.

I only have friends with boats, so I can't offer you a ride, but hang around and you'll meet folks. Seabrook is a good place to meet folks with boats.

It seems like everyone is spearing with scuba. Does anyone get any nice fish freediving?

Striper....I'm not sure about up there, but further south I get nice stringers all the time with no tanks. Hell I fill my share of the cooler when I freedive while others are scubaing.

Watch out for trigger fish! I haven't been bitten (yet). I've had a couple divers get munched on during dives. I have had to make a fist and punch a few to keep them off my speared fish though. I do make sure my ear lobes are covered by my mask straps. Sea urchins, they are all over some rigs in the top 20 feet or so.

sharks are around shrimp boats that we dive at times......other times nothing but dolphins and tuna. I haven't seen many sharks if any at the rigs, the floaters have pelagic sharks such as mako, but not many to worry about. Biggest thing to watch for is bull sharks in murky water.

Triggerfish will bite your ear if they get the chance.
