Not my best shooting

Some clips from a 2-tank trip in West Palm. The second dive we had several jewfish on a wreck that we were hunting. They seemed to be noticeably nervous.

I saw that a few of the jewfish had wounds that I think are consistent with speargun shots. One of the clips captured this with a jewfish showing a giant white spot (fresh wound) right above the eyes.

They didn't want to allow us to get close to them and they showed zero interest in the fish we shot.

Re: Not my best shooting

Edit:

So a previous post made by someone else has been deleted. My response may seem a little out of context without it.

I would categorize my comments more as “observations” rather than accusations. But the wounds I saw were all around the head and gill plate, nothing on the mouth or scratches on the body, which I would assume to be indicative of wear and tear from hook and line activities. Plus, as mentioned, their behavior was not to just ignore us, but they seemed to come out, take a look and then back off and hide.

This is a single observation on one dive at one spot, but the behavior differed a lot from what we sometimes see- where they are very interested in speared fish and watch spearfisherman.

This is not the first time I have seen head wounds near kill spots on the local jewfish, but the first time I remember getting video of it.

I spoke last year in front of fwc and I predicted that some people will take matters into their own hands if the government continues an indefinite moratorium.

Nice vid. It looked rather relaxing w/o Jewfish trying to eat everything you shoot. Your underwater vocalization was entertaining as always.

I couldn't quite make out what you were saying after those misses. Could you clear that up? It may be valuable information that could save the life of another diver!

Nice shooting and thanks for the video!

Re: Not my best shooting

Well the first one was “you are an azzwhole” if I remember correctly, I was pissed that I did not take a shot on the yellow jack and hesitated too long- probably because I was worried about the jewfish, and then when I find another fish- my first shot is a miss.

Jewfish is not the preferred nomenclature.

No parent would ever claim such an ugly, poor mannered offspring.

Jack Crevelle? Yes, treated properly and fresh, I've enjoyed them fried and smoked and was quite surprised.
