How much is a ticket for violating size regulations?

I'm new to spearfishing, and I want to understand how the laws in California are enforced. What is the penalty for an undersized fish or lobster? Are there different fines for different fish? If so, is there a chart with a list of how bad the fines are?

Some of the info is here..

http://www.courts.ca.gov/documents/july2011_jcbail.pdf

(search fish on above file.... it'll get you to fish and game part..)

Basically..... anything is Too much.... and you dont want to go there. do some search here or some other fishing sites.... fines over $1000 common.

I don't know what it is in other counties. but in Mendocino it's a $1500 fine, loss of diving/fishing gear, and loss of license for one year.

Thanks! This is what I was looking for. It looks like all the shorts are $400 for level I and $1000 for level M. But, what's the difference is between level I and level M?

Not totally sure, but I believe it's not level I and level M but rather, Infraction and Misdemeanor and the amounts the judge can composed is dependent on the type crime one is charged with. Be it a infraction or misdemeanor. In most cases the judgment imposed by the judge can be in range of money from null to the maximum amount possible for the type of crime. It's up to the judges discrepancy within a dollar range of what the fine/bail can be rather than a fix dollar amount like shorts are 400.00 buck. I think infractions can have a fine imposed up to 1,000 dollars and jail time and misdemeanors up to 40,000 dollars for fish and violations with jail time. Check into it if really want to know and you know what, I don't want to find out the hard way so this information is good enough as far as I am concerned, thus another reason why to stay within the regulations always.

Infraction VS Misdemeanor . FYI from talking with wardens, you get cited with a misdemeanor, then you must appear in court. The judge then determines the fines, which may be reduced to a infraction. There is typically some court fees which can be many times the actual fine as well. So is short, too damn much, error on the side of caution..

Understood - play by the rules, but $60,000 for a recreational abalone in a closed area? That's just stupid. Game warden will probably not tell you the fine when he writes the ticket - or he would cerrtainly get hurt or at least have to restrain the fisherman from doing so.

Why would you want to take a juvenile?

If you think $60,000 is "just stupid" see what happens when " ...he would cerrtainly get hurt or at least have to restrain the fisherman from doing so."
Now THAT is just STUPID!

No one want's to take a juvenile.

I'm sure that most people (if not every single person) on here have, at one point or another, whether you're willing to admit it or not, accidentally shot a ling, a halibut, or a white seabass that turned out to be a half an inch too short. Maybe the vis was bad, or it was taking off and you couldn't gauge it properly. Or have been out all day looking for bugs, and find only one that just barely clicks the edge of the carapace, and it was questionable as to whether or not it would pass as legal. The last thing anyone wants is to have "poaching" on their record, and be dinged with a thousand dollar fine after court fees. So my question is relevant, and worth asking.
