Cool Big Bang! Open Tournament Official Rules Discussion Thread

The Big Bang! Open is set for the weekend of July 24-26, 3015. We are returning to that same wonderful new venue as last year - the Moose Lodge in Palm Beach Gardens which is very close to I95 and the Florida Turnpike.

The registration process will start soon, but in the meantime, weighmaster Captain Randy Docks, MC Captain Billy Black have been revising the rules which are attached in DRAFT form. Please take a look at them and give us your comments and questions by posting in this thread.

The main changes are removing red snapper completely and adding Permit and Pompano like this:

WILD CARD CATEGORY – This category is designed to level the playing field due to grouper and snapper closures in various regions. Your wild card fish can be a barracuda or any fish now eligible in the above categories except you may weigh in only one gag grouper or black grouper total in order to comply with the East Coast possession limit where the weigh-in is located. West Coast Registered Shooters have a maximum number of two barracuda that can be weighed in for all categories and East Coast Registered Shooters have a maximum number of one barracuda as the Wild Card Fish. However, in lieu of barracuda, Permit or Pompano may be weighed in the Cobia or Jacks Category for West Coast Registered Shooters and may be weighed in only in the Wild Card Category for East Coast Registered Shooters. Contestants who weigh in barracuda (or any other fish) have the option of donating them to scientists for research.

Thanks, Tony

Re: Big Bang! Open Tournament Official Rules Discussion Thread

If you are new to this game, here is a video explaining the overall format of this "Aggregate Style" tournament which has trophies for the biggest fish in each category. The venue shown in the video is different and is now the air conditioned Moose Lodge, but everything else like that huge prize wall and the excellent food is basically the same.

Re: Big Bang! Open Tournament Official Rules Discussion Thread

So east coast spearos may shoot a permit and only weigh it in the wild card... not the jack category

That's correct. West Coast has no Amberjack.

download the pdf in the first post, it will explain to you how the tournament works. Tournaments are never free, as it costs too much to put on and host a event of this caliber. It costs $85 to enter, the nice thing about how this tournament is set up, everyone registered gets a trip through the prize wall.

you can shore dive if you want

Re: Big Bang! Open Tournament Official Rules Discussion Thread

What's the reasoning behind only allowing West coast shooters to weigh in Permit or Pompano in the jack/cobia category? I understand they can't shoot AJs and need another fish, but they can weigh in another barracuda which makes sense. East Coasters have 2 fish options in that category and west coasters have 4......

Why not just allow everyone the option to weigh in a Permit or Pompano in this category?

Re: Big Bang! Open Tournament Official Rules Discussion Thread

Kelly, we allow west coast shooters the option to weigh in Pompano or Permit in lieu of AJ as they are technically in the jack family. This covers the Gulf AJ closure in effect at the time of the tournament. East coast shooters can also weigh in Pompano or Permit, the only difference being the category they can be weighed under... so you can weigh in an AJ and a Pompano or a Cobia and a Permit and that would cover the AJ/Cobia and wild card categories. Hope this helps clarify things a bit ☺
