Mahi from kayak

Hello. I'll be visiting Ft. Lauderdale in late September, and I was wondering if it was possible to reach any spots for mahi by kayak. It's probably a ridiculous question, but I'm not familiar with the area, so any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

No, you will need a boat for pelagics.

I talked to a guy who's done it. Paddled out to the gulf stream with some goggle eyes catching sails. Pretty crazy stuff!!

The gulf stream sometimes is as close as 7 miles off shore from Hollywood. Thats less than a 2 hour paddle in good weather. But the problem is getting caught out there if really bad weather comes from the west.

Yes, i was told it is crucial to only try this type of fishing in calms seas.

You could EASILY paddle the 2-3 miles off the beach to reach 100+ feet of water and have a shot at mahi and other pelagic species on a calm day.

i have seen people hook sails a mile off ft lauderdale in kayaks...for mahi, youd have to get really lucky and find some loaded debris.

good fish to be had if you troll some plugs and wait for action

Re: Mahi from kayak

I caught one H&L trolling about 2.5 miles off Dania pier last winter and know guys that get em from time to time in that same spot from yaks. Like was mentioned, it depends on where the stream is and a bit of luck. I have heard of guys chumming them up and using flashers as well from yaks but they were a bit further out. Just watch those rouge storms out that far, I have caught in one 3 miles out and it is no fun.

Re: Mahi from kayak

Thanks for the info, guys. Sounds like kayak trolling is best left to the adventurous local, and the crazies. I think I'll settle for some inshore fish. With all the hurricane activity lately, I'll be lucky to have seas calm enough for a shore dive. Thanks again.

Hey I resemble that remark! But yea, with all the storms not the best idea to be miles out; plus the tankers out there don't turn very fast and if your focused on a fish you could end up getting horn blasted to move or die. Calm days and no storms though and it is an easy day and worth the paddle.
