Reels
A friend of mine just gave me a reel for my gun. I was wondering if anyone out there knew what kind of line to use and how much of it...
Thanks |

I think Dyneema is considered the best. It comes in white, which is good so you can see it, but more importantly, it's super strong and does not tangle in the water. I like 1.8 mm - 2.0 mm diameter which has 600 pounds breaking strength. Very good against abrasiveness. Holds knots good. It's pretty expensive though, about $80 for a 100M spool (which usually fills two Omer Pelagic reels). I used a cheaper line and lost a big fish. I think if I had used Dyneema, I might have landed it.
Some people use Spectra, but tends to only come in smaller diameters, and also expensive. Obviously, if you're using a smaller diameter, it'll take more line. If the diameter is too small though, it'll tangle on itself as the reel is pulled. |

i recommend using "Riffe Line" ... you should be able to spool about 250 feet of 500 lb or 150 feet or 1000 lb. i use the 1000lb because its a larger diameter and easier to grab (if i need to fight the fish away from the reel or rip it from the kelp). The line is called "High-Tech Line" ... buts its basically Kevlar....very strong

The 1000# riffe line is superstrong but hard to cut (safety consideration). Depending on what you're shooting you might want to go with the 500# and get more capacity. I shot a kingfish last year (est 30-40#) stripped the reel of the 1000# broke it from the gun, and broke the guide at the muzzle. It happened so fast there was nothing I could have done (except make a better shot to begin with) Lost it all.

I have been using 500lb Kevlar, but I am going to switch to either Dyneema or Spectra. These lines are a little stiffer than Kevlar, and I believe a little smaller in diameter.
Sheri Where are you buying your Dyneema? I found some 500lb, 800lb, and 1000lb white Spectra online on a site that sells kite supplies. They want $95 for a 1000 meter spool of the 500lb and $45 for a 100 meter spool. If anyone wants the site let me know. I have it booked marked on my other computer. Whatever line you decide to use, research what knot works the best for that line.

Hi Big,
Kindly show us/me the link. I am currently using 1000# Kevlar. It is soft. Never seen a Spectra/Dyneema, only heard about it. The Kevlar can take good abuse but is is very slippery, a special knot and a crimp is required. Thanks

Iya...here is one on-line place where you can buy Dyneema. You can either buy it by the foot, or you can buy a 100 meter roll. I've not seen it cheaper than this anywhere. It's .34 cents a foot for 2 mm / 570 pound, or $83 for the roll. It's the best!

Thanks Sheri, I just took a peek. Too bad they do not have the 750# or 1000#. In two of my favourite dog tooth tuna area, my friend broke the 1000# Kevlar once, very probably shark bitten I think, the rest of the line look to clean to be rock caused cut. I am hoping Spectra have better cut resistance as Kevlar can be cut with ease using a brand new cutter blade.
I find 570# at the shop too thin, I tried 500# Kevlar about the same 2mm diameter, painful to fight from. If 1000# Spectra is available, I want to try to see if it can withstand rock abuse better than Kevlar. I still have not find any "perfect" reel line. This is what happened to my 1000# Kevlar after it being rubbed to rocks by only doggie of about 88#. The shooting 500# coated cable took the most beating. Notice the knots get the worst rub cause it is the fattest, most bulging out. For Kevlar, single crimp regardless of powerglue application will not work, it will slip. This is what I hate about Kevlar. I must combine single crimp with a special knot, safer than even powerglued double crimps. Actually I really like coated SS cable but never even want to try to put it as a reel line. The SS cable if can be made super soft like Kevlar, maybe I will use as a reel line. How does your 570# take rock or rigs abused ? The 1000# Kevlar been good, but if anything can be better, I want to try out. Is Spectra as slippery as Kevlar ? Thanks IYA

Sheri
Thanks that is the same place, and olny place, I have found that carries higher test Dyneema. Iya I came home today and found my home computer dead. Luckily I just backed everthing up so I am in the process of reloading windows as I type. When I get my bookmarks reloaded I will post two sites for you. One is the site for the Spectra and the other is a site that has various Knots for use with Spectra. Unfortunately Spectra and Dyneema are both slippery just like Kevlar. If you use the right knot you should not have to worry about the crimps. If you are worried about the knot taking some abuse, you put some heat shrink over it. Just be careful with the heat gun so you don't damage your line. I don't know how any of these lines will hold up to a big "Iya type" tuna rubbing it on the rocks. There is only one way to find out.

I throw in my 2 cents to the original post and end up with some useful information for myself. Thanx guys and girl. I'll be ordering up some of the Dyneema to try on my reels. Speaking of reels what do you guys use. I've got/had a biller ( see my previous post) an omer pelagic and just got the new aluminum reel from sea hornet.

Iya
Sorry for the delay, but Fri was hectic and Sat was a 16 hour trip offshore. Here are the sites: http://www.kitebuilder.com/catalog/i...hp?cPath=30_75 http://www.ifish42na.com/doors/webpa...e_ID=12&DID=18 http://shoreangling4u.tripod.com/knotguide/index.html The kitebuilder site only stocks up to 500lb, but they told me heavier line could be ordered. The last site is a reference for knots. Try the Uniknot or the SanDiego knot. Good Luck

Thank you so much Big. I will study the materials.
Here is what I just learned over the giant grouper "stealing-me-fish" incident. Somehow I got my shooting cable entangled on one of my rubber and it squeezed the 1000# Kevlar. The squeeze was so tight, the coated cable nylon coating was abraided, it then cut my 1000# Kevlar !!! So the cable acts as a squeezing plier. The shrink tube I used can't even help a bit. The cut was so clean, I thought it was shark bitten. I wouldn't want my finger stuck in between those squeeze...
