Top Ten Wong Reasons
Without further A-Do
THE TOP TEN WONG REASONS 10) This gun is handmade, by Daryl himself, not mass produced, so each gun is perfect and made with care. 9) Daryl is willing to consult with each client to help them determine the right model, and he is very familiar with fish and conditions around the world. 8) Daryl uses only the finest old growth teak for his guns. Others use immature plantation teak, which is weaker, less dense, and less expensive. Others use mahogany or padauk which are less water resistant. He also varnishes and lacquers the guns which results in a beautiful finish and a low-maintenance gun which doesn't need to be oiled every time you use it. 7) His hybrid guns use the latest (stronger and lighter) highest quality materials, carbon fiber or titanium. Production gun manufacturs use materials that are more cost effective for THEM, such as anodized aluminum, cast pot metal, stainless, nylon 66, or very thin walled carbon fiber. 6) His Aimrite trigger mechanisms are assembled by hand, the housing weighed, and tested on a hydraulic testing machine up to 600 pounds. Each batch has a few tested to the maximum breaking strength, normally between 1250-1750 pounds. 5) The Aimrite handle is made from one of the strongest man-made polymer polycarbonates, also used in bullet proof material. The open pistol grip design allows easy handling and firing for all hand sizes. 4) The guns are internally weighted and perfectly balanced to prevent recoil which makes a big difference in shot accuracy. There is no need to add wings. 3) The higher quality materials, the tighter tolerances, the lighter and stronger materials, the perfect balancing, etc, all translate to longer reach with pinpoint accuracy. 2) There is a lifetime warranty on all guns and triggers, no questions asked. And the number one reason you might want a Wong - 1) You'll land more fish! |

IYA, from the type of fishing you do, I think you would fall in love with a Daryl Wong gun either the Mahi or the ONO, give Daryl a call and tell him I sent you, he will discuss in detail what you want and then deliver the goods. I dove with Riffe all my life and love the guns. I have 5 of them. However, there is just absolutely no comparison. All I can tell you is that you will not regret it. Apart from that, Daryl And Rick at aimrite are the absolute hands down best at service. No one can touch them when it comes to service and advice about their guns. I am going to hawaii to dive with Daryl soon on his boat. HE is just that kind of person. It truly is about comraderie and a great product for him. He is a very well respected dentist so he certainly does not do it for the money. You should see the fish those guns land, amazing is all I can say. By the way, I am not trying to sell you a gun, I just wanted to give you some insight from a personal experience.

Iya,
Honestly I think what you are shooting now is perfect for what you are doing. With the current you face a mahi or ono is going to be very hard to deal with as it is larger. Its nuetral in the water but the internal balancing means it has much more mass. Dont get me wrong, you know I sold my MT4 to get the Wong ono but I am looking from your point of view. That said, JC is absolutely right about Daryl. He is one of the nicest people around. You might even talk to him about your diving conditions and see what he says. His enclosed or open track reef guns might be an option, they run up to 55". But I know you and the versatility of being able to switch shaft sizes ect is what you are all about If you do email Daryl mention JC, me and Andrsn...well maybe not me: you should have seen what I did to that Ono Last edited by rigdvr; 09-03-2003 at 10:42 AM. |

I won a Wong 50 reef gun in the St Pete Open this year, and I have not had a chance to shoot it yet. Daryl is actually going to upgrade the gun to his new Middle Grounds Special for some additional $$, but this new gun is what I'm looking for. All wood with an enclosed track which runs the entire length of the barrel, an aluminum Alexander muzzel, and it takes a 5/16 shaft. This gun should give me the addtional stopping power I need to take down the big boys. He has only made a handful of these guns so far and doesn't have any pictures or prices up on his web site. Hopefully, I'll have my new gun by the end of the month, and at that point I'll let you guys know how it performs.

If you want to check out the MG Special when I get just let me know. If you are looking at freeshafting with it, check with Ray Oder in Tampa for shafts. $35 for a Riffe shaft is a whole lot cheaper than your local dive shop.

Hi JC & Kapiten Rig,
I will get the Wong soon but let me figure it out how bring it in and what version to order. "Mahi" at 55" will probably be my choice. Thank you guys. Rig, as you know I don't like 5/16" shaft and only 4 x 9/16" bands. I also don't like 5/8 bands. I have been shooting a few trips on my MT5 but overall I still like my MT3 better, I never tried an MT4 though. The MT3 with the twin wing kit is totally a different beast compared to the basic MT3, very heavy but stable and well balanced. Weight close to 8-9 pounds with shaft. Somehow any gun longer than 50" is not so fun for me because current always hamper my movement. I find the deadly range ( my conservative version of deadly, that is ) of MT3 at 23 feet with 6 x 9/16" bands and the 3/8" shaft is good for most condition, except when the dog tooth decided to stay very deep at 170 feet, where I try not to dive deeper than 150 feet. That is why I have the MT5, dive shallow, shoot deep. At 6 x 9/16" bands and 3/8" shaft, I am looking at 27-29 feet deadly, but I have yet to try on my reference plywood. Never could find the viz to test in my non hunting ground. As for Mr Wong being a very nice guy, that I have heard. I am sure he is not into the money, he is in for the love of making the spearguns......that I really respect. Since I dove so often at my deep pinnacle, the Dog Tooth tuna is getting more weary. The big ones are staying 30+ feet away now. A Wong definitely a must have for collection and learning, I like to test new products/brands anyway. The only way to learn is to keep buying new ones.......... IYA
