Re: Bluefin are hard to spear?

underwater, they are moving a lot faster than it looks..when they go thru a school of bait, all you can see is scales falling like rain...just tracking one is hard to do, especially on the smaller models that show up in our waters...first time I fired at one out at Cortez Bank, the shaft went 3' behind the fish..had to lead by 3' to even get in the zone...then, when I was dead on, the fish rolled over sideways to avoid the shaft (one guy here called it the "matrix" act) and the shaft went over the fish...but, it can be done with some patience and luck by hanging in the bait over one of the pinnacles...

Re: Bluefin are hard to spear?

Talking to a Kiwi, I guess all those monsters are shot pretty much point blank as they are so big they swim right up to you without fear.

Shooting a local football that's swimming at full sprint? Different story

BTW, that's one of the coolest vids I've ever seen!!!

I fed them just like that years ago in Hatteras. They are like giant Goldfish.

I was just wondering who put the bluefin in the koi-pond...

Why weren't they trying to hook up?

Re: Bluefin are hard to spear?

Wow!

That is some great footage!

Spearing the local small BFT is really hard.

I am 0-10 on shots. I think next time I will just get in with my camera.

Its nice to see people just enjoying fish and not killing them for a change.

Re: Bluefin are hard to spear?

I'd probably be too scared to even jump in the water with those things. Amazing video!!

Re: Bluefin are hard to spear?

Some great footage there.

The bluefins in New Zealand are bit tougher then just point blank shooting. First you have to get in next to a trawler doing 10-15 knots with wires and cables and all kinds of ****ed up shit and a prop bigger then the boat you are on going by. Once you get over al those dangers then you can concentrate on the 15ft makos and then try to relax enough to take a shot at one of the monsters which are moving at a pretty good clip since they don't want to leave the trawler were all the food is. Still alot of fun and the adrenaline really gets going. And well for me the water was freezing.

Any tuna is a good tuna.
