AR handle counter-sink with what bit advise
How do you route out the AAR handle rather than just bolting it into the stock. What bit do you use?

Before you start, hold that handle in your hand like it is a gun..swing and point your hand at an object..then sight down the top of the handle ...
Did you see what I saw????? the grip is at the wrong angle to the frame...you are aiming WAY TOO HIGH!!!! Now What?! I am thinking make a new handle....at the right angle... Your thoughts??? |

That would be so awesome. It's like 10 degrees or more off.

Re: AR handle counter-sink with what bit advise
Yup!
I dont like to sight down my gun, I swing my gun while looking at where I want the shaft to go, and everything lines up ( after years of practice). I learned this as a kid shooting a long bow. Takes hundreds, maybe more, of shots and all of a sudden your body knows where the eyes are looking... So yea...gonna make a new handle at a different angle...Sad! |

Re: AR handle counter-sink with what bit advise
Damn! Thanks for the insight. I wonder if place the handle in the gun at 10 degrees or so off would help

Re: AR handle counter-sink with what bit advise
I think what you are asking is what Radius Bit to use to match the Handle Frame. Since you said Bolting it on I'm assuming you are using a Flat Base Handle frame. So what you are asking is what is the mating bit to the corners of the Handle frame. Usually these are 1/4" So a 1/4" Straight Bit is what you would use to outline the Recess. You could hog out the inside with something larger. Take a 1/4" Bit and put it on the corner of the Handle frame and see if it matches.

Re: AR handle counter-sink with what bit advise
I usually clamp the frame to the gun where I want it and put blue tape down as a sort of outline and to protect the wood a little. Then I use a 1/4" brad point bir for clean corners and then use a chisel to cut the recess along the lines on the tape. I could never figure out how to rout it on my table with a raised handle.

Re: AR handle counter-sink with what bit advise
I'm just working with a 1/4" shank router on my table. I don't think they make bits long enough to clear my table surface and have enough left to clear my handle cutout and take out the material needed. I don't mind though, I like using hand tools when I can.
