From all the places I've shot in Florida I would have to say the middlegrounds on the gulf coast has the largest and most plentiful fish. Although, I'm sure others may disagree. At least it's actually IN Florida...uhumm ROCKBOTTOM

Yeah, not to mention the six hour truck ride to the ramp, four hours down the river followed by eight hours out to the rigs followed by the deepest waters patrolled by the meanest sharks with the thickest murk layers and the most rippinest currents

For Florida the Gulf Coast inside 15 miles, would have to be the Tarpon Springs area. Otherwise drive, fly, float, swim, whatever!!!!!!!! to the Rigs off L.A. They have big fish, and lots of them. And if you get bored you can shoot a 200lb ray or even a Tarpon.

Screen, you hit it on the head!

We have the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers pouring rich water out through a killer estuarine system, over the edge of the continental shelf, right where the Loop Current coming from the sill between Cayman and the Yucatan passes the closest to land. Bait fish galore, spawning ground for all kinds of fishes, barrier islands, rock jetties and breakwaters, several thousand artificial reefs in water from less than ten feet to over several thousand feet. Current and murk abounds!

Please feel free to call me when you come.

Now the best place to kill fish in Florida.......where ever you guys tell me.

best area in Florida

I posed this same question to Jim Zumwalt about 15 years ago on a four day trip to the middle grounds. I was surprised by his answer......hands down, Offshore Jacksonville. Said it was the best he had ever seen.

This is a very interesting question… I suppose the answer depends on ones perspective.

Where I live SE Florida, there are not a whole lot of fish, but the boat rides are very short, three reef systems within a mile of shore, and many deep wrecks and natural ledges out to 500 FSW and beyond… not that we’ll be diving the real deep ones. Also lobsters are abundant.

The Keys is much the same, the boat rides just a little longer… but as you venture out towards the Marquesus and the Dry Tortugas… the spearfishing is pristine. There are lots of big blacks, muttons, and good size hogs.

On Florida’s east coast north of Stuart, there are plenty of big fish. Sometimes the visibility can be poor and the boat rides get a little longer… but no-doubt-about-it the spearfishing is awesome.

I’ve never dove Tarpon Springs but I’ve only heard great things about it… it must be the best inshore spot.

My personal favorite is the Florida Middle Grounds. The boat ride is long… but the vis is generally good and the fish are abundant. With the cooler water and fish not accustom to humans… they are relatively easy to spear and your cooler is full in no time!

I think the Spearboard Open was a great measuring-stick for the different areas… the rig guys and the spearos from South Carolina did extremely well (as did the MG divers). I’ve got to go check out those rigs and the Carolinas!

Gee, I thought the thread started out saying best Florida Diving inside of 15 miles. I would have to say the Keys, then Southeast Dade and Broward and WPB county.

Inside 15 miles, I would say SE Florida and the Keys. I've honestly never taken a large fish in either of those areas though. I guess it's because the reef system is so large, the fish are very spread-out.
