Thanks for sharing!

I just got back from the Freshwater Nationals- my team was spanked! Thanks to the RMSA for organizing it and putting on a great event. Congrats to all the other teams that did well. Hopefully some of you can join us at Deer Creek on June 1st.

Re: June 1st Deer Creek, UT Event

Josh,

What point scoring system do you use for your tournaments?
Is it all individual?
I assume everyone is in the same category, no pro or novice divisions?
Is there any cash prizes?
How does your prize system work?
What is the entry fee?
Is there a grand champ of the series like the RMSS?

Thanks!
Chad

Re: June 1st Deer Creek, UT Event

What point scoring system do you use for your tournaments?
Usually the standard 1 point per fish, 1 point per pound. Some times certain fish can not be turned in, or certain fish carry bonus points.
Is it all individual?
Depends on the event. Deer Creek is focusing on teams, but we also have individuals. Basically when you sign in you will choose whether you are competing as a team, or as an individual
I assume everyone is in the same category, no pro or novice divisions?
Correct. For the last 2 years we have been doing these, they have been fairly relaxed - a wide range of competitors from novice to expert, everyone has fun
Is there any cash prizes?
We would have to have cash for that! With the low entry fees we loose too much money on these events to have cash prizes
How does your prize system work?
Similar to the RMSA events - basically we call up the winners in order and let them choose the prize that would be of most use to them
What is the entry fee?
$30 for Deer Creek & Flaming Gorge, $35 for Fish Lake (our biggest event)
Is there a grand champ of the series like the RMSS?
We will be doing a "Triple Crown" award for the top 3 individuals who compete in all 3 events (must compete in all 3)

Thanks for answering my questions.

Do you do biggest rough and game fish prize as well?
Is there a BBQ or food after the event?

I hear ya on the cost of hosting these events, it's not cheap and it's a lot of work.

Thanks!
Chad

We will do prizes for largest rough and game fish as well.

Working on the BBQ aspect - we definitely will at Flaming Gorge and Fish lake, not sure on Deer Creek yet.

Re: June 1st Deer Creek, UT Event

I hope everyone had a good time. It is a lot of work but it is really awesome to get together with a very unique and small community. So many good people yesterday and I feel fortunate to have made new friends.

I called an audible during the morning huddle and made a change before we started. I hope it didn't throw off too many people. The change was made by popular vote and was done to benefit as many of the competitors as possible and allow the "big" prizes to go a little deeper into the pool of divers.

By a landslide Nate K. won with 739 points in the PRO division, craziness! Followed by Danny R. with 382 points and Mike McQ 376. Mike also won the biggest game fish and the biggest rough fish categories. Nice showing Mike. Justin P. with 99.5 Shane B. 70.5, Greg P. 64, Steve Ph. 10.

In the novice division Nates younger brother Brandon K. brought serious skills on Saturday earning 214.5 points followed by Kelston McQ.183.5 (making dad proud), Jonathan V. with a personal best with 93 , Jacob K. who got off to a slow start but was able to step it up later in the day, finding the fish and bringing in 92.5 points. Jesse K. 43 (Jesse brought along his buddy < and my new friend> Bob who also competed and a new division was created for him "Extreme Novice") We can expect big things from those two for sure! Bill M. brought in a respectable 30.5 points, Phillip R. did well with 22 ponits.

For people new to the sport and when the point system (point per fish point per Lb) is geared toward shooting large numbers of large fish it is important to target the fish that is the most prolific and is also large. In this case it was all about the carp. Perch or other small fish while they are fun to shoot and good to eat just won't cut it unfortunately when it comes to winning freshwater tournaments.
