Drilling Harded Spring Carbon Steel Shafts - Heat Treatment?

Hey Guys; How do I heat treat a Harded Spring Carbon Steel to soften it for drilling?
And how do I re-harden it? - If it does need rehardeding - its for a line hole.

Also do you think the spear will bend? My guess is not.

Thanks
Kind regards,
Sam

Re: Drilling Harded Spring Carbon Steel Shafts - Heat Treatment?

This is not the preferred method but I used it to drill a shaft I shortened for a smaller hole gun.

I put the ended of the shaft over a propane burner, one you would use to deep fry a turkey in the driveway, until it was red hot.

I then quenched it. Drilled the hole with a cobalt bit (make sure you center punch first so it doesn't walk off the shaft) and installed the flopper. Completely redneck but it worked.

I have since fired that shaft into many of rocks and yet to see a bend but this is on a 60ish CM gun.

Chrome Vanadium bit may work

Are you drilling the shaft or the shark fin? If its the shark fin i just center punched and drilled mine. Not sure if its the same material or not.
