Fishing/diving kayaks

Any ideas on two kayaks I can fit through the door of a fifth wheel camper.Im looking for something to snorkel/spear and fish without breaking the bank.Just something to get on the water with and play a little.

Craigslist... or rental companies getting rid of old models. If you get 2 of the same kind they should stack nicely. Good Luck

Re: Transporting Kayak

My diving partner transported his 16 foot LightHall lay-on-top kayak on the top of his Ford pickup camper. It was a standard walk in camper (7 feet tall) with permanent kayak racks and it sat on the pick-up bed.

How did he load it solo. First, get a step ladder that goes inside the camper when no one is inside. To load, pick up the paddle board and lean it on the camper's top rear side, climb on the ladder and strong arm the board (60 lbs) onto the racks. Then use the ladder to tie down the yak and toss the ladder into the camper when ready to leave. He did this almost every weekend for years.

However, if you have a 30 inch wide kayak that weighs 80 to 90 lbs, get a boat trailer.

Re: Fishing/diving kayaks

I would say a yak around 9 to 10 feet because you dont want to go any smaller than that and you need one that can still hold your gear.

I recommend the Ascend D10t

and the Malibu mini-x (fishing set-up)

both are shorter than your average yak but they are still wide and stable and good for spearing.

If I had a choice between the 2 I would go for the Mini X because its 20lbs lighter and has handles and pole holes where you need them but the downside is that its more expensive. Check around craigslist for a deal.

Ive been looking online at the ascend at Bass Pro.Im 6'2"/230 lbs so Ill probably need at least a kayak that will carry 350#.My sons/wifes could be smaller.Going to storm tomorrow so we may make a day of shopping for Kayaks locally.

Re: Fishing/diving kayaks

I have the Ascend but I havent taken it out yet due to bad weather. I'll let you know how it goes. Some downsides from what others have said: the seat seems to slip out from under your buttox very easily, the bottom is thin, there are no handles on the side and no pole holders. The upside is that they are good for what you pay for. I also like how its has a deck that you can stand up on and paddle like a SUP or even fish in an upright standing position (the mini-x has this also).

Re: Fishing/diving kayaks

Got my youngest son(15 yrs old) a Walmart special and added rod holders myself.Cost around $260 out the door including paddle and rod holders. No reason not to be able to dive or fish when its that cheap! He thought he had to unload groceries out of the truck but got a boat instead!

Re: Fishing/diving kayaks

Took the youngest to the lake with his wallyword kayak and me and the oldest grandson fished from shore since I pulled some muscles between my shoulder blades and couldnt unload the canoe or paddle without pain.Striper is 34" and 15#.Son is happy now.
