Abellan denton 120 (2017) reel replacement

I initially thought the reel on the denton 120 was pretty good, line cannot tangle while spooling because of these nice line keepers on either side of it and overall seemed pretty well built.... but yeh its garbage, jams sometimes on free spool for some reason and recently after shooting a fish the reel fell off completely, the nut holding the reel fell off somehow when it went into free spool... luckily my dive buddy saw my reel sinking while i was surfacing.

so yeh looking at replacement either an aussie reel or the riffe low-pro horizontal... any thoughts on these, they are roughly the same price.

I've used an Aussie and they are solid just a little heavy... I like the click drag system on the Riffe though and I'll probably go that route myself as I hate the reel that came with mine too (freespool reels are terrible)

Re: Abellan denton 120 (2017) reel replacement

I have a Aussie reel on my 110 Denton and it is great. But I have a 90m reel on my Ulusub and really like the extra capacity. In Hawaii we do a lot of Deep dives and 50m of line isn't enough at times. Next time I get new line for my aussie I plan to get the 1.7mm stiff dyneema instead of the 1.9. Figure I can squeeze a bit more line and still be plenty strong.

Another note, with the Aussie I had to drill an extra hole in the Handel and add more lead to make the gun ballast property. The factory Abellan reel is really heavy.

Eddie, check out ulusub reels as well. Contact Jon and see what he has.

Re: Abellan denton 120 (2017) reel replacement

Not sure if the Ulusub Bluewater Reel displaces the same amount of weight as the Abellan Stock Reel. You could find out.

The way I calculate the weight in the water of a Bluewater Reel with line , swivel, and 2 #10 1" mounting screws is to take a piece of Teak and mount the reel. I put in the Salt Water Ballast tank set to 1.025 and add lead until that piece of teak with the reel is neutrally buoyant, ie very very slowly sinking. I leave this amount of lead taped to the piece of Teak and remove the Reel. I then put the piece of Teak back into the tank and add lead to that until it becomes neutrally buoyant. This lets me know the Water Weight of the Reel and Line. The nice thing about this reel is it adds quite a bit of Mass to the overall gun at the crux just infront of the handle, in my opinion this helps a little with maneuverability and Recoil management.

Total weight of Reel, Line, Swivel, Screws out of water: 1.4lbs, 22.6oz, 640gr.

Total weight of Reel, Line, Swivel, Screws in the water: .14lbs, 2.3oz, 65gr.

Will this Reel sink your gun like a stone? Grab a 2.3oz sinker and tye it to your gun in the Reel position and you will know.

Guys like the extra capacity for either Deeeep diving like they are doing in Hawaii or for Wahoo. A big Wahoo is going to Spool you, but that extra 100-150' of line often will be the difference between you getting to the surface and often will offer a better angle for playing the fish as you get pulled along by a knot..

You can find our reels on website. www.ulusub.com

Why do you think freespool reels are terrible? My Meandros is the best reel I've ever used. I can have it on freespool if I'm diving deep, or have it drag when shooting fish up in the water column...

freespool reels are the best and safest.

My denton is just barely negative with a 7.5x140cm shaft. Sinks totally level, really really slowly.

And you have an Aussie reel? I’m trying to dial in my denton 90. It sinks very slowly and is slightly muzzle heavy

Both my Denton 120 and Albacore 130 float with Aussie reels on with shaft in and GoPro mount attached. They both sink very very slowly with the GoPro attached from what I remember.
