Sasebo, Kyushu Japan anyone?

I've heard good things about Okinawa, but is anyone diving around Sasebo?

Diving, I would be up for, but no spears.
As I understand it, spears in most of Japan are likely to get you arrested.
Japanese spearos I spoke to said only Tokyo-to and Niigata-ken are legal.

Re: Sasebo, Kyushu Japan anyone?

I'm in Tokyo, which is a long way away.
It's silly, because spears are far more sustainable than traps or rods or nets, but as I said, spears (if you use goggles or a mask) are probably illegal outside of Niigata-ken and Tokyo-to.
I'm well up for spearing where I understand it's legal, but not where it's illegal.

Re: Sasebo, Kyushu Japan anyone?

Basically, it's legal in Tokyo-to, but the bay is off limits so your best bet is the Izu 7. It's OK in pretty much all of Kyushu as I understand it, Kagoshima-ken being one of the more relaxed places. I met someone who is from Osaka, spears out in Wakayama-ken mostly. It's also OK on the Pacific side of Shikoku. I haven't heard anything about on the Seto side.

I hear it's OK in Chiba too, but that's just secondhand information that I haven't corroborated. It's 100% illegal in Shizuoka-ken, where I live.

The one thing to remember, above all, is that fish are generally OK where they allow spearing, but invertebrates are never OK anywhere. That's what'll land you in hot water the fastest. If you dive, don't carry anything that might be mistaken for a goodie bag.

Digging this up a bit, but I'm back in town here in Japan. Planning a camping/spearing trip to one of the Izu islands for golden week.

Found out that it's illegal in Chiba-ken. It is, however, legal in Ibaraki-ken.

I'm on my way to Sasebo today from US. Is there a dive shop there? Would love to play tourist and see photos, buy stuff. Maybe talk to someone about diving during future trips.
