Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out
So, who sells the best inserts for small 1/16th hole bands? I see a lot of them but none say for 1/16 ID hole bands. I would assume there should be a difference in the size of the bead part?

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out
I think I made the smallest profile insert so far. The bottom ball is (if I remember correctly) only 6.2mm. I could probably have gone smaller, but then it could have been a problem with large ID bands. So far, I have not heard of a single failure of the insert popping out (I think over 3000 inserts so far).
I use silicone grease (same as used for scuba O rings) and then put in the SS insert. The idea is to make the inside of the band seal out water really well. One of the most important things in preventing the insert from popping out is to use the correct line to make your constrictor knot. I use kevlar (200lb or 250lb) and have not had a failure ever. Kevlar is great as the line doesn't stretch or slip. A single knot is enough but a double knot just gives added insurance. There just is no way that insert is coming off and water will never enter inside the band cavity. |

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out
Hey Guys,
Check these out… I should have them on my website later today. These are the best wishbone inserts for small ID tubing that I have seen. • They are easy to install. • They won’t pull out. • And they keep the water from being siphoned into the bands. • Easy to change dyneema without re-tying bands (no tools needed). • These things are awesome! MAKO Q8 Stainless Steel Small ID Wishbone Inserts. On sale: Only $2.00 each. Spearq8 gets a lifetime supply of these since it was he who designed them. I think I can speak for everybody on this forum in offering a huge thanks to spearq8 for all the amazing knowledge he shares with us. Thanks spearq8! Let me know when you need some inserts! I have quite a few of them in stock! Dive safe, dano

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out
And for those of you that are in Europe or for other reasons need to buy from a Euro shop you find the same inserts @ the ErmesSub shop. 10€/pair.
There is a slight language barrier dealing with ErmesSub / Mario, but I got mine from there and after a few google translated e-mails I got the goods delivered just fine. https://www.ermes-sub.net/accessori-vari.html |

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out
What about glass reinforced plastic? I like that over stainless steel 1000 times.
It's lighter, doesn't rusts and doesn't cut the wishbone.

These ones are quite light (2gms each on my shitty rough scale) and the have a nice little chamfer to prevent cuts. I’m sure one easily could make that even smoother with a quick touch with the Dreml. |

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out
Thanks getawayFK and Polespearo.
My web designer is taking care of some personal things today, but he said he will have them on my website in a day or two. However, if you call our shop, we can take care of you by phone. (540-361-1570). Thanks again, guys. So stoked to be part of this. Dive safe, dano

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out
I have also had an issue with dyneema bridles popping out of small ID bands. First tried the 1.8mm, then 2.0mm. Both failed.
The dyneema has a wax like feel which may contribute to slippage. The next option was 2.0mm spectra which has a coarser exterior. It also appears to tie a slightly bulkier knot. This, reduced the poppage rate. The other aspect is the constrictor knot process. To tie off I use number 12 bricklayers cord of a good quality(tight weave) brand. Once the knot is hand tightened and laying neatly on the band, place one tag end in a vice (or have a mate hold it with pliers) and wrap the other end around a piece of dowell, pulling the dowell with one hand as you roll the band with the other. The spectra and vice tightening has so far resulted in 100% success rate. However it hasn't prevented water ingress. |

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out
+1 for those stainless inserts, been using OBD's for over a year now, even on dinner gun that never gets rinsed, and no rust. they're just so much better for small ID bands at high stretch
great to see Majd making them easily available per prev thread [scroll down to bottom of page] use silicone grease and kevlar constrictor cord, and they'll stay dry and not pop even tying at 450%. and with dremel drum you can sand the rubber ends right down for a clear sight down the shaft http://www.spearboard.com/showthread...ghlight=insert Last edited by kavachi; 05-17-2018 at 12:29 AM. |

Re: Small id bands dyneema knots popping out
re bridle tying with those inserts, have tried several options
- single overhand stopper knot [ok for rush job in the water but knots block sight view] - single hitch with flattened cord end [super slim and simple but CAN come undone] - double hitch with flattened cord end....pic below....will not come undone, preserves clear sight view, and can be easily retied with same bridle - great for switching bands btwn guns or shortening bridle. loving Benthic's 1.9mm aussie dyneema for bridles - cheap as and comes in diff colours so can colour code bands to gun, or load sequence as Majd does Last edited by kavachi; 05-17-2018 at 12:30 AM. |
